Wether it is an SAS, or Factory rig, the axle will fit under your '86. However as you have noticed it is a quite involved project to do the swap. Since it sounds like you either don't have the ability/time/or necessary desire to do the swap yourself, expect to pay a shop upwards of 3k to do the work for you. However, to answer your other ? About swapping the bodies, it is a less technical job, but a bit time consuming, but is something you could do yourself relatively easy. This is the route I would go, as long as the frame of the one in the wrecking yard is straight. This would save you a ton of $$$.
ThatÆs the kind of talk I like to hear. IÆm going in the morning for a better look. And yes Darin, the top end of the engine is still at large and my Motor Honey has not said a word. That could spell trouble. So just to cool the jets, we are 4wheeling Saturday with a few buddies at work. I am going to let her drive the entire way. Lets just say I hope she might get stuck and would then understand the value of good front-end rebuild. ôSAS of courseö LOL. Not to mention I will get to down a 4 pack and just be the spectator screaming like a school girls at the monster hole she is heading for! Man I hope she sticks it good in the mud so I can then explain the importance of this SAS front end.

PS ... We have the mad possum problem here. Those darn things just freeze in the road on you as you come up on them. Not to good on a Rubin sandwich either..

shoot....if in fact it is an 87. Than they did do an SAS. Grab an angle grinder and steal all of the front stuff you can (then again, it might be weaker rewelding it all back on). Maybe the Hangers, definately springs/shocks driveshaft etc. Man that is definately a find if you have found an SAS'd vehicle in a junk yard.

Does it look stock height? If not steal everything, you'd come out way cheaper in the long run.

Its 6:00am. You guys have me tossing and turning all night. I had to get out of bed to keep reading this stuff. I didnÆt sleep a wink last night. I canÆt wait until the junkyard opens this morning...What the heck happened to me? You guys caused this. Damn you all! "Not you Good Christian" LOL, I need more power [color:"red"]Power [color:"red"] POWER [color:"red"] POWER
I canÆt make this monster in my head go away!
So should I grab any of the cab parts? What about the rear suspension goodies?

I found a military front today, will this work on my 86 4x4 that has the newer 4x4 setup with the CV joints on two a arms. I noticed that two long shafts go from the front of the arms half way back the frame. I definitely donÆt have these mounts on my frame. My suspicion is that it will not work. If this is the case, will the two bodyÆs ôCab, bed, extàö all change over to the other frames very easily?

The whole post has me kind of confused. What does "military front" mean? I'm just wondering what you've found.

I think the door tag is on the body in the door jam, not the door itself, right? So, maybe it's a 1987 truck that came from overseas or South America? Solid axle trucks were sold there through 1997. Or an SAS as mentioned. I'm just curious what exactly you mean in your description.

Sorry for the confusion Brian, AFter looking at your cool website, I see why you are confused. The front end looks like what you have under your truck. IÆm a newbie to the world of rebuilding Toyotas. My knowledge and terminology is limited to this web site. Therefore I must be real smarts. I sold a couple of frame rotten Yota 4x4Æs a couple of years ago. These good old toothless guys ôCOULDö have come from my family tree out of West Virginia. Bubba and Bubba ôBrothers of courseö told me that these solid axles on the front of these trucks were called the ômilitary front-endö ASSuming that everyone calls them that in his neck of the woods. But as I keep checking these posts, I see most folks call them SAS. So in my limited capacity of truck chitchat jargon. They are the same, and yes this truck had 1987 smacked on the door with that cool yellow marker that junkyards use here. I have about 10-minute until the junkyard opens and Ill be standing inline at pole position. Ill clear up this confusion, I have been wrong before. Heck, itÆs probably a Chevy pup two wheel drive now that I think about it. LOL. Time to go and check it out. Later.

So, what what was the verdict? If I were a betting man I would say that the yard just got the year wrong on the door and the truck is really an 84 or 85. Who is going to let a junkyard take their solid axle swapped truck? Even if it was wrecked I would expect the owner to part it out.

It isn't just the backwoods that refer to them as military, I have heard it used out here in CA by the old timers. I think it stems from the WWII generations'' early experience with 4x4's being in the military, then the carry over of the Jeep to the consumer market.

Thanks Snowtoy for the info.
Welp, Its has 1987/Jan stamped on the plate on the door jams; it all looks factory to me. Conversion or factory, I dont have a clue? The axle is bent to a smile shape and all of the pieces on both ends are gone. Bone yard dogs picked her clean I guess? Then I looked at the frame and was able to see daylight through one section behind the cab. The other side is rusted badly too. This beast looks like it was dropped from 500 feet to the pavement and bounced down a mountain. Not much left on the truck, I grabbed the power steering pump, a few plastic interior pieces and gave it my Hell Marries.
