Otherwise the tires melt it into an ice pack that quickly turns into an ramp in front of the tires which stops you cold. The right combination of bigger and wider tires and wider wheels and M/T tread pattern is all you need. Chains are only useful on smaller tires wich have no floating capability what so ever.
