Yep, the ARB bumper must come off on a 2nd gen to mount the winch.
That is the beauty of keeping your winch from getting ripped off.

Leo, you might want to add a little security to it too once you get the solenoid pack mounted to your bumper.
A malicious punk could take a paper clip and short out two terminals under the cap and start your winch up.
Not good, especially if they un-spool your line and wrap it over your roof back to your rear bumper.
It would cave your rig in like a sardine can.

Here is my solution.
Further down the page is a Warn Power Interrupt kit.
Your winch power lead goes to a solenoid that goes to a switch you mount in your cab.
The switch must be flipped in order to supply power then to the winches power line.
The Power Interrupts power lead which is the same size as the winches goes directly to your battery.

This will give you peace of mind from the tree huggers.

The 3 short thick black cables on mine had green, yellow and blue tags on them. The 3 terminal posts where they go had a spot of green yellow and blue paint to tell you where each wire goes. I extended them with 1 gauge welding wire and put the relay box on the PS reservoir with zip ties. There was no where to hang it on the Rockstomper bumper its nice and secure there.

One problem with putting the solenoid pack under the hood is if it shorts out under a heavy pull (which they have been known to do). The cure is to put a master switch out where you can get to it fast. Make sure it is a heavy-duty switch for batteries or have the hood open when winching.

I saw the 2nd gen when I reread. I had thought I would have to remove mine on my 85, but I was able to squeeze it up in there....

The basic mounting and wiring should be similar though, except your bumper/winch assy. will be heavier when putting back... It was heavy enough separate... I'd get a fried or two to help lift and wrench... Good luck. I like OOP's idea for a HD battery/winch disconnect switch. He's got some other great ideas on his rig which I saw when he picked up a spare front axle from me a year or two ago...

Here's an idear - when I had an ARB, and needed to mount the winch to it, I used a couple motorcycle tiedown straps run to the garage joists, one on each end, then lifted this end and hoisted the strap, lifted that end and hoisted the strap, repeat until high enough. I was able to install/deinstall with no assistance- and NO BACKACHE!

You can make little adjustments, unbolt, back the truck out of the way, work on it, and reinstall it pretty easily. Then when you release the straps you get to see how much that weight does to your front suspension! Make sure you have good straps.

I don't have any info wiring it up like David suggested, but using this kit from Warn, it will cut off all power going from the battery to the winch.
All I do is flip the switch in my cab, and it either supplies juice to the huge wire going to the winches solenoid pack, or it cuts it off entirely.

It's all controlled from this little solenoid, much like a battery isolator.

I forget what I paid for it, but it was not much.
Very easy to hook up. It wires up just like wiring up a Hella driving lamp with a relay, only the unit itself is the relay.

When I put a winch in my arb bumper I made a little stand out of 2x4s. It bolts to the d-ring mounting holes, the back of the bumper just rests on the 2x4 stand. The stand supports the bumper so you can slide it around, mount the winch, slide it back to bolt up. Makes it a one man job.

Hey Corey, How's the sunburn? I was wondering if the Warn solenoid kit could be used as an anti-theft device if it were attached to the battery/ignition system? Mark

Hi mark, the last of the scales fell off my face & head a few days ago.
Man, I got fried!

Hey you know, you might be able to run another wire to this device to cut juice to say the fuel pump, or the coil, not sure.
Kind of late, and I'm not thinking to clear.
I hear the sheets a callin' me now

But I do think it would work that way. This thing can also be used to power a set of built in jumper cables that you plug into the front of your rig like the police use on some of their rigs.
At least Boeing security has built in jumper cable that attach at the grill to jump start folk's at work.

PS, go topless tomorrow!
Todd loves taking his top off with the wife & kids in the rig.
His doesn't leak either when he puts it back on.
PPSS, there is a run up at Reiter Pit coming soon. That's up by you right? Shane might be going.
Crash from the Snort board is putting it on. See Yotatech for the details.
