Thanks for the pic, Axe. As I had suspected I don't have this part. I'm bummed. I was hoping I did. I guess that I'll just have to eventually get a chip. Is there any Sportage owner out there who has a chip? I know they're expensive, but someone has to be trying one out. Jay, your '96 does not have this arrangement? Are you sure? I went back and looked at the kia parts site. According to them the 1996 engine has the same IAC. It was in 1997 that it moved to the intake pipe. How about anyone else with a U.S. 1996 Sportage? Do you have this IAC assembly?

Fokion, You're not the only one feeling stupid man! I didn't figure it out yet. This is my engine: (stock and looking like garbage compared to Here!)(hope this will work): The IAC valve is the one with the Yellow arrow, right? Notice some other differences between mine and Here's.

Yea, the IAC is as you indicated with the yellow arrow.
And yes, you have another bypass hose from the intake to the throttle body that it appears "Here's" does not have.
This is getting really weird. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

To CBP-yep, that's the one. AS for that other hose -guess Kia was doing a lot of experimenting in those days!

mmmmm......... mine is like yours CBR ( 99% sure I 'll check this afternoon) BUT my IAC valve is EXACTLY the same like Here's. Maybe because I have changed it recently and its a new version or something....
Yes I saw the missing tube you are pointing with the right arrow, but I am not sure what you are pointing with the left arrow other than the slight difference at the intace manifold..
As I was explained some time ago this valve controls air. providing more at hard press and that because if you look carfull the tubbing route, is is bypassing or assisting the throtle boly mechanism the engine "vacuming" more air than the oppening of the throtles.
The second tude that we have and here dont seems that does the same job but without ANY control.

This looks like my '96 engine. Instead of ripping into the IAC device and having the "modification" show up on emissions inspection (which I know many places have) and making a change that would be difficult to reverse, wouldn't it be simpler to restrict or plug one of the hoses?
A 2 liter engine doesn't need a lot of air to idle. Those hoses look pretty large for controlling bypass air around the throttle body only at idle speed. A restriction would let the system bleed some air at idle but would keep it from bleeding a lot of air at higher engine speeds. Maybe the large hoses allow it to let the engine coast with a lean mixture when the throttle is lifted, which doesn't really hurt anything. Modern engines don't have a lot of engine braking for this main reason.
Hmmm ... I see an experiment here. Trying various restrictions and watching gas mileage and the output from the oxygen sensor might be revealing. It would be necessary to probe the sensor first and see what the engine does in its factory configuration before making any changes.
