This looks like my '96 engine. Instead of ripping into the IAC device and having the "modification" show up on emissions inspection (which I know many places have) and making a change that would be difficult to reverse, wouldn't it be simpler to restrict or plug one of the hoses?
A 2 liter engine doesn't need a lot of air to idle. Those hoses look pretty large for controlling bypass air around the throttle body only at idle speed. A restriction would let the system bleed some air at idle but would keep it from bleeding a lot of air at higher engine speeds. Maybe the large hoses allow it to let the engine coast with a lean mixture when the throttle is lifted, which doesn't really hurt anything. Modern engines don't have a lot of engine braking for this main reason.
Hmmm ... I see an experiment here. Trying various restrictions and watching gas mileage and the output from the oxygen sensor might be revealing. It would be necessary to probe the sensor first and see what the engine does in its factory configuration before making any changes.
Don, y'all . Funny you should mention that. After 1997 with the IAC on the intake pipe the air bypass hoses are much SMALLER in diameter than you guys have with the older IAC. I wish I had a pix. Does anyone have a pix of a U.S. 1997 or newer engine compartment that they could post?

I have a pix that shows the newer IAC location. If someone can host it and post here let me know and I'll send it to them.

Axe, I'm almost positive my '96 doesn't have it. I do have huge, mystery hoses going to and fro around there, but I can't be certain. Tell you what - I've only half a cup of coffee in me at the moment and am still in jammies. Let me finish that cup, grab the slippers, and I'll run out to the parking lot and get a better look. I can't wait. Maybe I do have this damn mod . . .

Well, I'll be damned. You were right, Axe . . . I do have this part. Don't for the life of me know why I thought I didn't. And the part is still bright and shiny. So, Axe, now what? What do I remove, and what do I do with that snake pit of hoses? Anybody?

i had a 86 jeep wagoneer, and when i found a hose (happend regularly) that had no apparent home, i'd just plug it . of course, my engine did enventually catch on fire. . .

Jeez...next time wear your glasses. I have no clue what that Kia dealer in the Philippines did to the inside of that IAC. Apparently they gutted the inside but what part specifically I don't know.

so, whatwould it hurt if you just ran hoses together in that spot? Well, usually an IAC valve has a pintle on a small motor shaft that controls the amount of bypass air which controls the idle. I suspect if you pulled it out completely and allowed uncontrolled bypass air the engine wouldn't idle and might run at high RPM. Given that I don't think you could just join the hoses together. Dave...if I send you a pix can you post it on here?
