couple questions, i thought when i was having trouble with my coolant temp sensor (the one reading for the ECM) that you said the part in the photo with the "i don't know what this is" title WAS the IAC for newer models.

That's not my picture Dave. I stole it from a post in StreetKiaZ. That item shown as "dunno what it is" is indeed the IAC. This is how U.S. 1997 Sportages look and ALL Sportages after 1998 right thru 2002. You can see that there is one bypass hose just to the left of the IAC to the intake. No mass of hoses like the old style IAC.

And I got to thinking. The old IAC uses the SAME crappy electrical connector as the new one. That connector on the newer IAC is a KNOWN trouble spot for wacko idle problems. In fact, I cut off the electrical connector and soldered the wires directly to the IAC. It fixed ALL the wacko idle problems. I wonder if you guys with the old IAC did the same if it would eliminate all those problems too. It's a thought and worth a try rather than trying to gut the IAC.

This has been a great thread and we've all learned a bunch of things. I've been looking over some of my previous statements in this thread and I've made some incorrect assumptions. So...to correct things:

This unit on the older Sportages apparently does NOT have a "cold start" injector valve. It is simply an older design of the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve.

This older style IAC was used on all OBD-I Sportages thru 1997.

It was also used on U.S. 1996 Sportages even though they are OBD-II. Truly an "odd duck"

1997 U.S. Sportages have the newer IAC.

All Sportages 1998 thru 2002 have the newer IAC.

We have no clue as to what to remove internal to the old IAC to cure idle problems.

Axe, I've never had a problem with my idle. Its as perfect now as it was when I drove it off the lot. Im trying to imitate what "here" did in his original post. Got any ideas? I'm going to first try just simply unpugging it.
How about you, Dave? Have you fiddled around with yours yet or come up with anything?

Jay, if you simply unplug it you'll set a CEL, guaranteed, especially with OBD-II. And it probably won't idle either. My take is that if you've had no idle problems then don't invite trouble and leave it alone.

I thought you were going to say something like that. Crap. But my CEL is always on anyway.
I'm dying to run outside and gut the damn thing out, but leave the housing plugged in with all the hoses connected. And I really wish "hear" and his KIA mechanics could shed more light on this. I want to get rid of that RPM hold . . .

I have a pix that shows the newer IAC location. If someone can host it and post here let me know and I'll send it to them.

Never mind about the last post.
I have tryed a couple of things:
1)First I tried to bypass the IAC, making sure there was no air leak.
With this configuration, as Axe just said the engine wouldn't idle and after revving up, it would run at high RPM. I also got some backfiring.

2) I tryed to Isolate the hose opening. Didn't work either. No idle at all and again, some backfire when I rev up.

Something that I didnt'try (and I should've) is disconnect the IAC connector with the engine in Idle.

I'll take some more picts showing details of the other red arrow. It seems like an yellow box with some thin hoses. I'll take detailed pictures tomorrow.

(Hey, I'm a Wheeler now! and also Feel free to help me out with the english language!)

CBP, your English is fine. In fact, better than some folks who claim they speak and write English as a first language.
