Tiab, Kia can tell the dealer to 'take it out' if your in the Philippines cuz it doesn't get cold anywhere here. I'm curious what Kia would tell CBP in Brazil if he went to them and asked about this..... But the idea of a cutoff switch sounds good for those who can take advantage of it -if it can be done.

I MAY be moving to Thailand and I MAY take sporty with me. Same climate there so I'm good to go if I do.....

i don't think it was failure-prone, i still have mine and it's 8 freakin years old.

i didn't get to mess with it today, but i will try it tonight or tomorrow.

as for temp, i don't think we'll get down to 22 again this year, so it should be ok.

what is this rev-limiter/RPM-thing y'all 're talking about? what does it do? etc.

Okay, another update.

I concluded that I was restricting the air through the solenoid circuit a little too much. When I started the car this morning, the idle didn't get much over about 1000 RPM on a cold start. It was smoother (less air = richer mixture), but the low cold idle speed bothered me. So I found some washers in my junk (miscellaneous hardware) drawer that were the same outside diameter as the hose inside diameter. I changed out the brass fittings having the hole diameter of about 1/8 inch with a washer having a hole size of about 3/16 inch. Tomorrow's cold start will show the effect.

I'm not sure it runs better, but it certainly doesn't run worse.

Is the "RPM hold" being discussed really the same as the Rev Limiter? I don't see how the IAC valve could control max RPMs... that is usually done with the ECU.

No, this is the sometimes annoying habit of the IAC "holding" the engine revs elevated for a second or two before it drops down to curb idle. It's actually the ECM commanding the IAC to do that. Seems to do it much more in the Summer when the A/C is on. Apparently the older IAC does it more frequently and possibly at a higher RPM.

You'll see this more on the stick shifts when you throw the clutch to come to a stop. You won't see it with the automatics.

Well, here in Brazil I guess they would have no idea whether I can plug it off (They'd probably say NO!). But I may try the switch thing.
Fact is that they probably build general specs to export the car wherever, and unless it is pretty justifiable for the market size (like US) they will not change a bit of the project other than to adapt to local legislation (daylight running lights in Canada, fire extinguisher in Brazil, etc.) I Wonder why Europeans get LSD and Americans don't! I've seen a sporty with electrical fan and it makes an interesting bit of difference. But the setup that I saw required some trimming to pull the radiator forward to accomodate the fan.

Interesting. I don't believe that I've ever noticed such an occurrance. I'll have to pay more attention the next time I take the Sportage out for a drive. Thanks for clearing that up! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

unplugged it last night, ran it this morning. had rough start-up, almost stalled, temp was 45*-ish F. CEL glaring at me. no noticable power gain, very slight RPM drop. drove the same at 55, 65 and 70. going to plug it back in today and forget about it, so if i do have a problem, the CEL will be able to alert me to it.

The rev-limiter is software in the engine management computer that limits the maximum RPM the engine will operate at under normal conditions. It keeps you from over-reving the engine.
