98 XJ 4.0 A/T it came with a Jet chip, K&N filter, T/B spacer, and exaust. It's my first auto, and I'm still having trouble staying off the stupid peddle, and I only check my milage on the weeks I don't go wheeling. I'm averaging 15.8mpg just going back and forth to work, just over 200mi to the tank. Oh, if I get below 1/8 tank it starves for fuel on left hand turns.

i get almost 24 mpg on the hwy 18 in city. K and N filter and a smaller gas tank on the cherokee. Im surprised that the tank is smaller than the fac specs. it was supposed to be 20 gallon not 16. also it got a new auto tranny. i havent hit 300 miles on a tankful since i left ks for DC.
Arent cherokees supposed to get 20 gallon tanks? if so do i go to OEM dealer to get it replaced?

Deaf-
Is the K&N filter that you have an OEM replacement? Or is it the kit where you now use a cone shaped filter? On your tank question (not that I am an expert in Cherokees...yet), my Haynes maual says the cherokee came standard with a 13.5 gallon tank and has a 20 gallon optional tank (although I think in later production years, the 20 gallon tank became standard). I see nothing in the book about a 16 gallon tank (unless it's a 20 gallon tank with 4 gallons of debris collecting in the bottom).

90 XJ: 4.0, auto, 3.55 gears, 31" tires - gets 16mpg city highway and 14mpg city. Has K&N OEM filter drop in, and Accel coil and wires, and removed the reducer from air box

03 TJ: 4.0, auto, 4.10 gears, 33" tires - gets 14mpg highway (best ever recorded) and 10-11 city. But it is pushing a lot of extra weight.

I wish I got 20 in my XJ, or more it must be nice..

i think i have asked this before but does the T/B Spacer actualy help any...fletch, when you put yours on did you notice any difference. i also had a question in general. it's been on my mind just keep forgetting to ask it. what is the ordeal where say... your driving down the road then you take your foot off the pedal and your RPS falls from 2000 to about 1500 really quick. then you can put your foot on the pedal again and it jumps back up to about 2000-2100 quick. i don't understand that. anyways...let's get on with the K&N BRAWL!!!

Rudy, was the K&N kit that you added the replacement filter? Or was it the new induction tube with the conical K&N air filter? I am seriously considering investing in at least a K&N OEM replacement filter for my 4.0L. Have you done any other mods to increase your mileage?

It was the whole induction tube and conical K&N filter. Other than that there are no other mods, but keep in mind it is running 215/75 r15 tires (27" in diameter).
