Getting the Wheeling Fever
just bought an '87 Runner, and I just found this page and am impressed so far with the forum and tech articles. I'm gunna start needing parts, body stuff like windshield trim, to who really knows what in the engine bay. Runs solid enough now... but want to start builing, and am new to wrenching. where is a good place online or elsewhere to look at parts. Or does Toyota still have/stock OEM parts for them?

thanks.

I'd say if your going for 4x4 performance parts pick up the latest issue of "4x4 directory" magazine, its got ALOT of 4x4 shops for anything you'd ever need in all states, it's a great magazine. Other then that go to your local pick and pulls or junk yards, you can find alot of good stuff sometimes.

Welcome!

Where are you located? I buy all of my parts from Stevens Creek Toyota. They give a discount to members of the Toyota Land Cruiser Association and the techs really know their stuff (I deal with Val).

Even with the discount though OEM parts can get pricey. Check the For Sale section of this BBS for people parting out trucks and check your local auto wrecker and 4WD clubs.

www.car-part.com is a directory of junkyard inventories, and is also an awesome resource for used parts. I have some information on other places on my links page. Hope that helps!

'sup georgia! the only kind of questions that are actually stupid newbie questions are the ones you dont ask, where it could have prevented accidentally leaving a major part somewhere on the trail, or lighting your brake pads on fire .

get a factory service manual, haynes manual, or whatever you can find (the fsm is best, but $$$)...taking care of the engine, and bolt-on suspension mods, are the easiest place to start wrenching. work your way up til all your mods involve welding something (community college welding class = ), and you spend all your time on the pirate bbs searching the archives and trying not to get flamed for asking stupid newbie questions .

have fun,
sean

Don't sweat being new- It's still legal in most states....

Where to start? Start by asking questions like this! smile

Seriously, I would lay my hands on a 1987 FACTORY (as in Toyota Publications) Service Manual (FSM for short). You can get them on eBay for a song. If you can't find one, they are available from Toyota Pubs (for more than a song).

For info, just ask. For general knowledge, just lurk and soak it all in.

For new OEM Toyota brand parts, there are several online dealers that are very competitve. Sometimes your local dealer will price match the online ones just to keep the sale.

For used parts, start here at Shawn's page. He parts out Toyotas for a hobby. His prices are reasonable and his service is excellent.

Anything you need, just post.

No flames here dude, just welcomes and ataboys mostly.
Grab some popcorn and sit back while you dig thru the info. Lotsa stuff out there for your ride. Toyota stocks pert near the entire truck so you should be able to find anything you want if you end up at a dealer. There's even online dealers that offer wholesale costs so you dont hammered too bad.

Just wanted to add my welcome from Atlanta metro! Lots o' smart AND experienced people here (I'm not one of them-- ). Let me know if you are up this way sometime-- there are quite a few Toyota guys up here. If you are interested in getting into some off roading, there are a lot of us who head up to the north Georgia mountains (or NC or TN) for some trail riding.
