well, save yourself some time, and broken tools, and get a deep impact socket (1/2" should do) and a breaker bar. it really shouldnt be that big of a deal to get off...mine had never been disassembled and wasnt much of a problem at all. if you're using a 6 point socket, the starter method shouldnt be a problem.

and if i remember correctly, the torque spec is in the 90 range, i think the hayes said 94.

oh, shoot. the light bulb just went on in my head...since this is an 88 trooper you're dealing with, that head may not be worth saving. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> the earlier 4ZE1 heads were lousy and prone to cracking. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />
what people "generally" do is get a brand new casting to swap in. i'd highly recommend doing a search on the subject. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
