I have a '84 4runner project and would like to get a bit more horsepower out of it. I live in Portland, OR, so I have emissions to deal with though. Major bummer. I haven't decided though what I'm going to do yet. Lately, I've been thinking about going the 22RE route, which from what I'm gathering is better when dealing with emissions in that you can get more horsepower through mods, but won't have to worry about emissions, as much I.E. -> LC Engineering offers a kit that's all emissions legal and gives you an additional ~ 20 hp which, to begin with, the 22RE has a bit more than the 22R, which would be satisfactory for me. BUT, I know nothing about EFI except what little I've been reading about in the last week or so, enough that I'm not sure if I want to hassle with changing heads, and converting everything else, & also making sure all the EFI components, sensors are working correctly (as I would be purchasing a used engine).

My other idea was. . .screw the emissions, build up a carb 22R engine ('87 block/heads) with oversized valves, Weber carb, headers, cam, etc. . .and swap out the engine every 2 years when I have to renew tags <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. I'm thinking a 2" exhaust system, higher-flowing cat, mounted as configured as stock as possible, in case I'd have to put the stock exhaust/cat back on if/when emissions won't pass with my "emission test" engine.

Any suggestions? Bang for the buck? Easiest, most practical solution(s)?
