Ok - so with only backspacing issues being the problem, I can go wider but shouldn't go taller, correct?

I have a friend who said he'd do the body lift for me (was thinking 2") if I wanted it, but didn't I read with an automatic you get into having issues with the steering column or drive shaft or something?

Proper backspacing on a wider rim will allow you to run wider tires.
A suspension lift ( T-bars and springs )
plus wider rims will let you run both taller and wider tires.

I'm not a big fan of body lifts... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/barf.gif" alt="" />

I hope this helps.
