Getting the Wheeling Fever
Well I decided to drain my transmission fluid today, so I went to the stealer and paid $7.15 a QT for, Diamond SP III Trans fluid. While I was cleaning the pan bolt, I noticed
the head was stamped DII. I never noticed this before and don't recall anyone talking about this before.
Am I the only One with this special bolt.

They are all stamped dII or dIII to the best of my knowledge. I believe that refers to diamond star II or III, not dexron II or III.

We will probably never know, all I know is the factory service manuals don't ask for dexron.

The manual for a 1990 calls out Mitsubishi Plus ATF or , Dexron or Dexron II.

Dexron III is an acceptable replacment. (edit) and as Lloyd points out in the next post ATF+, or Diamond SP appear to work as well ( I have never tried them but other report good results). I have run Mobil synthetic in my 87 auto with good results and plan on using it in my 91 tranny. ATF type gets a lot more important when you get to models with electronic shifting and feedback. (end edit)

My expereince is stick with ATF+, or Diamond SP which is what that refers to. Some people have found a reference to Dexron, which I thought was for power steering, but apparently its for the trans somewhere. Either way, even the older Mitsubishi Auto will work better with ATF+, or Diamond SP. +III seems to really work. I just changed out the "modified" Dexron crap a rebuild shop put in a year ago, yesterday, hoping to get rid of a minor performance problem. Another advantage? Other owners will carry ATF+ or Diamond SP during group runs on the trail.

I have always ran Mitsu fluid, I just never noticed the stamp before. I just got the truck back from my X, a few month ago, and wanted to flush out the trans, and not wash it out. The fluid looks like flat soda. I think if I do a drain and refill every few weeks I'll be ok.
And Lloyd, I seem to remember you needed a few Qt's from me a few years back <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" />

I haven't looked at my truck yet, but an extensive web search yielded nothing about this particular bolt head marking.

I did mine this weekend, and did the old pump it out trick that a Mits tech posted once. I was removing that added inline filter anyhow(see trouble post) and had a new hose hanging down anyways. Start the engine, let it pump out the old fluid until it starts spitting. Turn off the engine, add a quart. Repeat. About 3 quarts got it priety cleaned out, and that nice ATF+ red color.

Lloyd, I though that any time the pump wasn't pumping continuous fluid that there is a possibility of damage. Am I just paranoid?

Hmmm, I've always been told to take off the return line and drain the pan, fill the pan, run a bit out the return, refill the pan, run some more out the return, fill the pan etc...

That seems to get the whole thing cleaned without the tranny ever realizing its being tricked into giving up its oil smile heheh
