Man, I admire your stick-to-it-iveness. Coming along. You'll like it when guys look at your frame and can see no sign of hack.
Be sure to 'heal' any gouges with your welder and don't force cooling of the material, can't tell how deep the gouges are.

Yeah, I got a few of those. I'm trying to becareful but.... I try not to cut too deep and then go over it with the grinder . I grind so that it's level with the rest of the surface.
I notice that my saw-zall really slow down when I try to cut the weld meterial instead of the metal. Is the welding meterial made of stronger stuff?

You bet it is. Due to the weld heat plus different material.

Definitely try to sawzall the non-weld portions of the metal and hit the weld beads with the grinder later. You'll waste umpteen blades and lots of time trying to saw through a lot of weld bead.

Yeah, I've gone through a few blades that way already.... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/baby.gif" alt="" />
I'm glad I'm doing this myself instead of going to a shop. I learn so much. Maybe I can turn it in to a buggy when I roll it..... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

You could grind down the welds to weaken them and then use an air chisel to peel 'em off, working the long dimension. Worked fabulously for me. Peeled right off in little curliques of steel.

I'm trying to grind more stuff off and cut the rear t-bar mount too. I guess if it's worth doing, it's worth doing it right... Remember one of your T-bar mounts holds the E-brake. I just left my old T bar mounts in place. Doesn't hurt nothing unless you want to use the FROR T-case crossmember.

BTW how are the 5.29's with 35's anyways? I am likely going the same route SFA as you soon but I am running 4.88's instead for now. Do it, you'll love it. Unless you already got 4.88s all around and with lockers. In that case, lower T-case gearing might be the better way to spend the cash.

i'm confused...i have 31 x 10.5 BFG AT's w/the stock 4.10 r&p gears....isn't 5.29 much more than compensating for 35 inch tires...i ran it through my calculator and 4.88's are much closer to stock ratio??? anyone? Are you sure you have 4.10's? With the V6 I would think you would have 4.56's, I do. A lot of V-6 trucks actually did come with 4.10s and 28" tires. The 31s were not standard on most trucks, only optional. Here's the spec sheet from my '89 brochure: http://www.brian894x4.com/page14.jpg
