Here recently I've been noticing my 4runner 125K miles rides like sh*t especially on the crappy roads here. If I hit a manhole cover the whole thing shakes. I think maybe if I got some new aftermarket shocks it might fix it. Anyone think it will, or is it just the way 4runners are, it's never been super smooth, but lately it seems worse, could just be the roads. Anyone with aftermarket shocks notice improvement from stock?

i've still got stock '94 4runner shocks at 146,000 miles and aside from the slight sagging in the posterior, the thing rides almost better than my new car. Dirt roads and trails are more rough of course. I'm no expert but, it sounds like a problem to me. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

At about 50,000 miles on my 2000 4Runner I could feel the rear axle bouncing a lot more due to the rear shocks getting weak and replaced them..
I believe that the heavy weight of the rear axle and not to mention heavy larger tires does a number of the shocks pretty quickly..
Noticeable improvement when I replaced the shocks.. Still running the original front shocks however..

I thought I heard that the shocks have a lifetime guarantee from Toyota.I had called their customer service line about the history of mine concerning the head gasket ever being replaced and I thought she said the shocks and something else had lifetime warranties.Anyone else hear of this?

Mine were gone after about 20k. Bear in mind that the day after I bought my 4Runner I went out and put 265/75 BFG A/T TA's on it which increased the unsprung weight considerably and also drove about 4k miles on old mining and forest service roads.
OEM replacement is OK, but when I replaced mine I went with a Gabriel HD model which was a nice change. KYB and Bilstein also offer direct replacement shocks.
Sounds like your have had it.

I just put McPhereson's on mine and it made a world of difference. I suggest going and picking some up, they are not that expensive if you get them at the right place.
