Getting the Wheeling Fever

I currently run 31s on stock Montero rims and have never had any rubbing issues, even with major flex on the trail. At present there are no modifications CapnCrunch: What width are the 31's you are running on the stock wheels? Stock is only 6 1/2" wheel width correct? I have the 3.0L engine so hopefully that will be enough to turn the tires and wheels. A friend of mine recently did it and hasn't complained about it yet. Also, I am from the Carnation area and have been in the Seattle eastside for about 9 years now. Don: I am aware that some have a variety of offsets available, but others are very limited. I am looking for a polished aluminum alloy with a simple design for easy cleaning. I haven't found many of those available for the backspacing needed. I probably just need to do some more research, but haven't gotten to it yet.

I have the 3.0L engine so hopefully that will be enough to turn the tires and wheels. Whirlibird, IMHO, the v6 has more than enough umph to turn my 33x12.5x15 BFG MT's w/ a few hundred extra pounds of 1/4 plate protection. I am aware that some have a variety of offsets available, but others are very limited. I probably just need to do some more research, but haven't gotten to it yet. I wanted a simple traditional design. I opted for an American Eagle Type 54 wheel w/ a neutral offset/backspacing. Design has 6 big round holes that nicely match the 6 lug pattern. Simple with the right offset to handle 32x11.5 BFG MT's. Edit This rim's no longer on their website. The rim size is 15x8 w/ a neutral offset/backspacing. Better yet, here's a pic with them on my rig... ![[Linked Image]](http://pics.montypics.com/off-roader/2002-08-07/articulation2.jpg) Stuffing a tire at the time... Here's another one of me in Utah. FWIW, most tire shops will tell you the largest you can fit w/out mods is a 31 which is true. But shaving off 1/16-1/4" on my rubber bumper ends was simple enough. I just let the tire do it whenever I made turns . Last but not least, mines a LWB v6. I know this doesn't show it very well, but my BFG All Terrain TA KOs 31X10.50R15 do not rub anywhere even on the bumper ends. They are on stock rims 6.5". I do not rock crawl because there are no rocks in south AL. But I do air down to 15psi Min. I don't want to pop a bead. Wider wheel are in my future, but being on this site I couldn't wait to get at least 31"s on. Wheel to leaf spring clearance: ![[Linked Image]](http://usera.imagecave.com/wyleone/Mvc-657s.jpg)

Don, Excellent!! I made a second version of your diagram, by placing all the tyres on the "ground". Same data, different perspective. ![[Linked Image]](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v474/4ePajero/TyreSizes.gif) I found this somewhere (credit to originator!), and it explains a few terms. ![[Linked Image]](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v474/4ePajero/1051032236_Wheel_Backspacing_and_Offset.jpg) Sorry for my spelling - we South Africans spell tyre like the Poms!

Another method is to consider the spacing from the hub face to the inside edge of the tire - which will hold inner clearance at the OE dimension and prevent frame rub.
Using the 3.0L 235/75/15 on a 6" wheel as an example:
235/25.4 = 9.25" tire section width - 6" (wheel width) = 3.25"/2 (sides) = 1.75" bulge (each side of the wheel) + 4.375" (back space) = 6.125" as measured from the hub to the inside edge of the tire - as delivered in OE trim.
Now it is fairly simple to work the same formula with other tire/wheel combinations to determine what back spacing is needed to keep the inside of the tire close to the OE position of ~ 6" from the hub. Here's a chart I've developed on various combinations of wheels with either 10.50" or 265mm section width tires - Some won't work, but remain on the list. Generally any combination that results in 5.50 - 6.00" should be ok, but as the tire gets taller, inner reach on articulation will increase, as will bulge when aired down - so for anything taller than 31s it may be advisable to hold the dimension to 5.75" (or less). Any of the combinations above 6.00" are likely NOT good choices. Those who have run the combinations will be able to spot any that may create a problem:
31 x 10.50 x 15 15x7 - 3.75" B/S = 5.50" RC-97 15x7 - 3.75" B/S = 5.50" RC-99 Chrome 15x7 - 4.00" B/S = 5.75" AR-767 15x7 - 4.50" B/S = 6.25" RC-97 15x7 - 4.50" B/S = 6.25" RC-99 Chrome
15x8 - 3.50" B/S = 4.75" RC-51 15x8 - 3.75" B/S = 5.00" RC-97 15x8 - 3.75" B/S = 5.00" AR Baja Chrome 15x8 - 3.75" B/S = 5.00" RC-99 Chrome 15x8 - 4.00" B/S = 5.25" AR-767 15x8 - 4.50" B/S = 5.75" RC-97 15x8 - 4.50" B/S = 5.75" RC-99 Chrome 15x8 - 5.25" B/S = 6.50" AR Baja Chrome
265/75/16 16x7 - 4.00" B/S = 5.75" RC-97 16x7 - 4.00" B/S = 5.75" RC-99 Chrome 16x7 - 4.00" B/S = 5.75" AR-767
16x8 - 4.25" B/S = 5.50" RC-97 16x8 - 4.25" B/S = 5.50" RC-99 Chrome 16x8 - 4.50" B/S = 5.75" AR Baja Chrome 16x8 - 5.00" B/S = 6.25" AR-767
265/70/17 17x8 - 4.50" B/S = 5.75" RC-97 17x8 - 4.50" B/S = 5.75" AR Baja Chrome 17x8 - 4.50" B/S = 5.75" RC-99 Chrome
RC = Rock Crawler AR = American Racing
The same type of calculation can be used to determine how much further toward the outside of the truck (from stock) the new selection will place the outside edge of the tire.

Well, here is what I came up with. I decided to go with the Eagle Alloy 058 that matches what I have on my Toyota Tacoma, and use the Goodyear MTR 31x10.5x15. That gives me a 15x8 wheel with 3.25" backspacing so if I choose to use a larger tire later, I can do that pretty easily. I also made a deal with the tire shop to swap a decent used tire of the same size for the spare. I was hoping that the setup wouldn't rub, but it does just a bit at least when turning right. I haven't driven it enough yet to see if it does it turning left too.
At the same time, I had the aligment checked and all the hardware was in good condition, but the front bearings needed repacked, so had that done and the alignment at the same time. It now steers better and no more bounce from one of the front tires.
Now I just have to follow the tech posting to space out the spare and should be set to go.
My wife really likes the new tires and wheels and they are quieter than we thought they would be, so that is a bonus as well.

From what I can hear as I am turning, it is on the end of the bumper caps like I have seen mentioned before. I test fit one of the tire/wheels from the Tacoma on it before I picked the tire/wheel combination, and with the 32x11.5R15's it definitely "rubbed" on the end caps, but nowhere else I could see. With one tire size smaller, I suspect it only rubs under the right conditions. I have to look at is closer in the light to see for sure.

You will rub the bumper endcaps even with 31's. The endcaps actually intrude into the wheel well. They're easy enough to trim back with a sharp blade. Cut them off to follow the line of the wheel well.
(I just edited the original post to include this information)
