I have been planning a 2.8 to 3.4 swap for my '90 Troop. I have a Ford 302 V8 already, and am wondering how hard it would be to put that in instead. I am not typically a blue oval fan, but since I already have a well maintained 302 and an automatic transmission... Well you get the idea.
Any input?

no say it ant so, ford
just jokeing, I think it would be alot harder, you would have to replace alot of wires, computer and well alot of other stuff.you would have alot more power though. but with all the work I would rather have 350

wait just a second! the ford and chevy war will go on and on. there is no way of telling which is a better brand. everyone has thier opinions that cannot be changed. but the fact is that both have pro's and con's respectively. the ford 302 is a classic as is the chevy 350. their are mods for both engines out the whazo.
the ford is a well know engine. every mechanic worth the his weight in feathers can work on them and there are engine swap kits everywhere. don't woory about the "wiring" you can buy the kit for cheap. and the fact that is smaller does not make it any less powerfull than the 350. the ford can do the same numbers the chevy can. and the biggest decideing factor here is you already have one and you know how it was treated.
i say go blue oval!

Yes. This is true. I already HAVE the 302. I also have the tranny, and the computer. It is in my mother in law's grand marquis. I have done all of the maintainance on it, but she wrecked the car. It was hit hard on the side, but the engine and tranny are fine. It was not my intention to start the battle of the motor companies... I am more wondering about the costs of the custom fabrication I will run into by doing this swap, and whether or not it would be worth it compared to the 3.4L upgrade

I'm sorry, I didn't want to start a flame ether. hey if you put a v8 in your troop you would be better off then me anyway. I always thought that there would be alot of wireing to do. I thought that you would have to take apart the dash and make your own harness. I've been thinking about a v8 swap but don't like wires. if you do this man, tell me how it goes!

Hey... no apology necessary!!! I will be the first in line to stand behind a bowtie!
Here's the bottom line... I have about 2700 bux to do an upgrade... If I can get the 302 in there for that, then I will go that way. If I can't, then I will go the way of the 3.4.
I REALLY REALLY REALLY want the 302 in there. I can't do it by myself tho... Anyone want to be involved in a "first"?

The first is going to have to be first 5.0 in a Trooper. I imagine you know that Randii is working on this swap into the infamous/near mythical Amigo some say is in his garage (sorry Randii, couldn't help it.). Check the thread Freak Serpentine Belt in the Tech side and you'll see what all he's had to go through to get it to fit in the engine bay.
There again, you probably already know this, so just ignore the man with the dreams for a Powerstroke TD in his '86...

Tom...Randy sure seems to be having a heck of a time stuffing the 302 into his amigo and it sure doesn't seem like a task I'd be up for. I wonder how much more room our troopers have under the hood than an amigo does. That could make the difference between "adventurous" and "masochistic".

An amigo is pretty small... I would be interested in finding out what the size difference in engine bays is. If a Chevy 350 will fit, shouldn't a Ford 302?
Just a thought.
