I am about to puchase some toyota axles from an '85 PU, and was wondering if anyone would recommend a shop or be willing to weld on some spring perches to put them on my '48 CJ2A?

Personally, I agree with "freak", but any more
jeep is a state of mind more than what part you might have welded, bolted on/to it.

Toyota axles in a jeep does not a toyota make.

A jeep was chosen to install these axles into and caring for a jeep with quality parts is far better than letting a nice flatty rot in a muddy farm field.

Sure a nice pair of 44s would be better and maybe a bit stronger, but hey, if toy axles are handy, what the hell. Light, strong, easy to find parts for, it works for me.

SjS jeep email me and I'll let you know some info about local shops.

It shouldn't be hard to come up with Dana 44s. For the rear, Scout II or '86-'90 Grand Wag work well if you want it to be centered. The '80-'86 Grand Wag HD AMC 20 is also a good choice. These choices all have a centered diff though. If you want an offset rear to match your Dana 18 look for '74-'79 Wagoneer Dama 44 rears.

For the front, the easiest thing to do is to get a '74-'76 Wag front end and cut the long side of the housing down by about 3.75". The job is not hard. People have done it with chop saws, sawzalls, band saws and even a circular saw with a metal cutting blade. There's an article on this in the Jeep tech section under axles. Send the long side inner shaft off to Moser or Dutchman and they'll shorten it for around $55. You can make the outers either 5 on 5.5 or 6 bolt by using either F150 or Wag rotors if you have the '74-'76 Wag or Chevy disc brake spindles.

If you're going to upgrade, you might as well do a decent upgrade.

if you're bound and determined to use them...yell at Carl Witmore ( I lean)..I believe that's his name over in the Toy section. He's got an earlier cj-2a(what he calls a CJ-2a) with all toyota parts...he can probably help ya.

A wolf in sheeps clothing is still a wolf.... meaning if your drivetrain is all made up of brand x and you slap a Jeep body on it...it still doesn't make it a Jeep.....

I don't buy into the Jeep state of mind montra...it cries of liberalism and 'can't we all just get along' type of thinking. Basically, if I owned a honda crv and I wheel it, then it's a Jeep if I so decide to call it.....

To me, the Jeep is the ultimate vehicle of freedom
not only today, but 60 some years ago as well. It's a symbol of freedom, especially your flatty. It was built with American ingenuity....that is something I can take pride in. With the world stage set as it is, this nation can use all the patriotic pride that it can get..... buy American when you can. Putting Toy axles on a flatty is like.... putting a swastika on the American flag IMHO.

Good day,

Del

You want Stronger? I have a D60 and a D44 from a 3/4 Dodge I'll sell ya! lol 44's would be nice, but for a flatfender, toy axles would be ok. What motor are you going to run?

Del old buddy, you opened a can-o-worms...

The jeep has been tarnished to the point that I can't use capital letters to spell it anymore.

Benz owning/building jeeps hurts me (not to mention jeeps). Germany still wants to take over the world and is quietly waiting for the chance. And still has the insane notions of Hitler.

Japan however, has been nuked, squashed and given up. They are a friend now, and likely to stay that way.

When does a jeep stop being a jeep?

Replace the frame? OE Engine? Heck that tosses a lot of flatties.

The Sniper is a re-built jeep.
Shannon Campbell's rigs are all jeeps and at least use jeep "lines" and real cj2a-3a grills.

Are those rigs not jeeps? or at least the next evolution. Not to pick on your rig Del, but why do you think jeep went back to round headlights?

So, how many parts anymore, does it take to build a jeep?

jeep went out of buiness when the nazi's took it over with money stolen from jews.

Sorry to say, all that is left of jeep is
"the jeep state of mind".

SD

Currently I'm building a TLC for a friend with 454, th400 M300 14 bolt, D60, frame USA modified, body the same.
Is it a Toyota? Or a Chevy? Or a Jeep?
I think of it as a kick ass rig.

Josh,

I have never been afraid to 'open a can o' worms' with anyone about any subject...

I agree with most of what you say except:

quote:
Are those rigs not jeeps? or at least the next evolution. Not to pick on your rig Del, but why do you think jeep went back to round headlights?

So, the square headlights of my Jeep does not make it a JEEP? C'mon, be serious. I'm talking drivetrain here that's a majority of another brand with a jeep body on it. How about the Honda crv....say I put a Jeep body on it..is it a Jeep? You seem to think so...

quote:
The Sniper is a re-built jeep.
Shannon Campbell's rigs are all jeeps and at least use jeep "lines" and real cj2a-3a grills.

Ok, Land Rover's were first built right from the chassis/frame, drivetrain of a surplus MB/GPW... so I guess they're JEEPS. The FJ-40, a copy of a JEEP..it too is a jeep I suppose. The HUmmer has a lineage to the Jeep, I guess it too is a JEEP. Hmmm, why even have all the classifations here on the Wire forums, since all have a direct/indirect lineage to the Jeep and the Jeep is a 'state of mind' vehicle..... heck, let's simplify things and just have jeep forums and nothing else. See what I mean?

BTW, if you're going to pick on my JEEP, leave the headlights alone and pick on my factory Japanese made ax-5 And when it goes, you can rest assured that a BW t-18 will go in it's place

quote:
Benz owning/building jeeps hurts me (not to mention jeeps).

You are very correct about this point...anti-semitism(s?) is at an all time high there. will they never learn? Ignorant people! Benz buying and owning part of Jeep has to be one of histories biggest ironies...it's sad.

c-ya,
Del

Del, I'm specifically NOT picking on the "tangles" for headlights. Rather I'm pointing out that the public complaints about the non-round lights got them to go back.

The best frame jeep ever came up with started with the Yj.
