'98 and up troops had 3.5 liters in 'em.
Pre '98 2G troops had SOHC and DOHC 3.2 liters depending upon model year and options selected.

I can tow 15' boat over mountings without any problems. One time it was really funny when we went to OHV area close to lake Elsinore and I have a boat on the trailer.

I previously had a 92 DOHC Troop. I loved it until the power steering leak that was not visible because it was collecting in the alternator shorted the alternator thereby spiking my tranny computer and resulting in a $1500 repair happened. (run-on intended)

sorry that i'm a little late to this thread. i think i'm going through this, except backwards. last year, my tranny blew. then, the tranny solenoids had to be replaced (shortly after the tranny reman, but long enough after for the warranty to expire), that was when i learned that my alternator was not putting out enough current under load, and just recently i've noticed that i'm leaking powersteering fluid. i was just going to keep topping off the power steering (actually atf) fluid, but after reading this, i'm getting motivated to get back under the trooper. i've tried to pinpoint where it was leaking, but was having trouble.

kuranosuke, do you remember what had to be replaced to fix your powersteering leak?

moog, i've been doing a lot of thinking about getting another trooper. although it will be awhile, i've decided to get a '95 with a manual transmission. advantages: wider track, redesigned dash, lack of sotf 4wd (one less thing to go wrong), and if it is a stick shift, the lack of the 4l30e (again, one less thing to go wrong).

good luck, taro

I have a small pop-up camper that I want to tow, and a 5x8 cargo trailer that I would tow from time to time with a minimal load. Correct me if I am mis-informed here, but wasn't the 3.5 only available on the newer troops? (2000 up)

I would probably get nothing any newer than a 95. Even thinking about a blazer with a 4.3...

i tow a 1000 pound trailer all the time with no problems. i have 265/75's (32x11.5) get good brake pads, like the nicest possible

Ok then... The 2G troops seem to be as well built as the 1s... What about lifting them? Is that a problem? It is easy on the 1Gs because of the leafs and T-bars. How pricey is it to do to a 2G?

$ 150 for Old Man Emu progressive rate lift coil springs.
Those provide 1.5-2" lift in troopers.
Then you can add 1 or 2" spring spacers to get about 3-3.5" max lift.
The front is the same as 1st gen troopers.

you should spend some time cuising through Matt's site to get an idea of what you would want.

Yes. The steering system on all Troopers is recirculating ball, rather than rack and pinion.

I believe that the ball joint spacers (and the ball joints) are different on the 2nd Gen, so the parts are not interchangeable, but the methodology is still available.
