Yep this is what looks is like is happening here. Just rechecked the voltage. At battery with engine off, 12.4V, at idle 13.6V, at about 2.2K RPM, voltage drops back down.

Sounds like a bad diode in the VR.

Could be a bad VR, that is what I first thought, is it part of the alt?
With 100k mile on it I will probably replace the intire thing.

The Voltage regulator is internal to the alternator. You can replace it but you'll have to tear the alternator apart first.

I replaced the alt, $146 (I think) from Napa.

I do not have a manuel for my Rodeo so I did it "blind", let me tell you that 3.2l engine + auto trans + 4x4 = PITA alternator change.
I guess it really wasn't that bad, but it is in a tight space.

i'll be picking up an alternator tonight and doing it blind as well. hopefully the 5-speed 2wd is easier.

OK, good luck, if you get stuck, post here I will try to check this thread and can/will have you call me. It is a little tricky because there is an elongated bracket that goes under the alt, I assume it acts as a splash guard also.
I took this bracket off to get it out, but the order that I put things back together was different.

Just remember that sometimes you can acess the alternator through the wheel well with the tire off.

if anyone else has this same problem with, do NOT let it go too long. mine started 5 miles into my 35 mile commute. on the last mile, the brake and battery lights were on continuous at any rpm. when i went to leave work, the problem was still there. a volt meter read 12.6 v not running and 12.2 running from idle to 2500 rpm. luckily, we have a maintenance shop at work so i can change the alternator there tomorrow.
