Hi guys, I bought a 93 T100 4x4 5sp back at the end of December, and finally got around to doing some basic maintenance on it today (Maybe that says a lot about what kind of mechanic I am, but lets not go there). Anyway, I was changing out the spark plugs and broke off part of some plastic *thingy*...there are three of them in a line just behind the EGR valve with lots of wires and hoses connected to them, three different colors (orange blue and green). I broke a little black cylinder off the bottom of the one nereast the front of the truck (no digicam=no pics, sorry). Went for a little cruise after I was finished and everything seemed to run fine so I figure no harm done, but I just wanted to ask the experts. Can somebody tell me what these things are, and what that little black part I broke off is? Should I be replacing it, and is it expensive? Otherwise the truck has been great so far!

Hey, you should have kept that to yourself. I posted a while back that I was having problems changing my spark plugs and every Mr Goodwrench on the board made fun of me for 3 days. I paid some guy at a tune up shop $50 to put mine in. It took him 30 minutes and I sat in the pub across the street and had a beer. Best $50 I ever spent.

I would take the "thingy" into the dealer and have them order you a new one if they don't have it in stock. Waiting in a pub sounds good to me

Otherwise the truck has been great so far! sounds like an A/C idle up or similar. i'd have to see a pic or diagram. why doesn't somebody post up a pic from teh FSM of a 3.0V6. i know justin has one. then you can point out what you broke. you did better than hawg though. you'll know how to fix it when there is no mechanic and no pub close by.

I did manage to change the oil in the transmission, both diffs and the transfer case with Redline, as Surly suggested, so I'm not totally useless as a mechanic. I'm just better at sitting in the pub waiting for someone else to do it.

OK I finally found it in the Hanes manual, it says its a vacuum switching valve for pulse air injection, something to do with emission controls. The little cyliner I broke off doesn't seem to do anything, so I cut it open. Inside was the tiniest little filter I've ever seen! By the looks of it, I'd say the black plastic is just a splash guard and its simply an air filter. The verdict is I'm leavin' it broken, and I'm off to the pub
