I did the opposite. Unbolt the lower ball joint and the shock and pry it apart and it should slide out clean. You won't need to press out the studs in the axle - I did but found I didn't need to after I unbolted the lower ball joint. You are right that the Haynes manual just says undo and remove - they are a bit stupid.
