Solid Axle Hub Problem #406394 02/25/04 12:58 AM

Is it possible for the splined axle shaft to be out of center with the hub studs? I ask because I just screwed up the 2nd hub body that I was trying to put on there. I tried helping it on with a hammer and broke the C-clip collar on the splined piece inside the body. Seperately, both slip all the way on but together it wont go on w/o some friendly whacking which ends up breaking it. On a second note, anyone built up the end of the groove so that it'll hold a C-clip again? [Linked Image]
Not the best picture ever but gives the general situation Im in.

Body Damage is Cool
Have you check the steering arm nuts as well as the bottom ones? there's also the bolts that held the spindle in place. seems like something is loose that causes the birfield not to be align with the hub.

Steering arms are tight, tire spins freely and doesn't wobble. Truck has been driven 650+ miles as is so far. Does that eliminate any of those?

If you added a bunch of shims on the upper kingpin/trunion bearing cap, but didn't add any under the lower cap... then the knuckle, spindle, and hub would no longer be in alignment with the center of the axlehousing.

You should use roughly equal thicknesses of shims on the upper and lower caps to get the correct pinion preload, not just add all of them on the upper cap.

Nope, need to get another hub first and try to get more insight into it before I start ripping it apart.
