1. I may be seeing things, but...
2. Am I'm seeing some scoring in Pict 2c toward the top?
3. I'm in agreement,
4. That the oil ring
  • Failed, or
  • Was Stuck

5. Check the cylinder for bore and taper,
6. Hone it with a good set of stones and oil,
7. Re-ring the piston,
8. And go from there.
9. What type of rings did you use:
  • Cast, or
  • Steel?

10. Have you checked the rings clearance in the piston groves?
11. As for the Temp gauge...
12. Buy some Permatex Black sealant.
13. Remove the top radiator hose from the thermostat housing.
14. Clean the thermostat housing hose bib and inside of the radiator hose.
15. Lay down two 1/18" wide, 1/16" thick by 2"long beads of Permatex, 1/16" apart, parallel to each other
16. When the sealant is cured drop the sender down into thermostat housing so the sender is just resting above the thermostat.
17. Lay the capillary tube down in between the Permatex lines and smear a little sealant over the capillary tube.
18. When cured, gently push the radiator hose back into place and
19. Reseal the hose with TWO wide radiator hose clamps.
20. Do NOT use the wire type you have to remove with water pump pliers.
21. The clamps will put pressure on the Sealant and seal against the capillary tube.
22. Be careful not to crush the sender's capillary tube,
23. It will seal without that much pressure applied.
24. Use tie wraps to tie the sender capillary tube to the radiator support rod.
25. As for gauge placement, here's mine:

Hi LEVE,

I'm not sure yet if I'm going to invest in this block. I have not replaced the rings as of yet.

Here's a pic of the #2 main bearing.

Note the wear on the #2 rod bearing (pic above in first set).

The crank feels very smooth. The cylinder wall feels very smooth.

I'm beginning to believe, as others have told me, that someone did a very crappy overhaul on this engine.

There is no signs of a ridge on any of the cylinders.
There is no signs of a cross hatch pattern on any of the cylinders.
The bearings are worn.

if the crank is still verry smooth and the bearings are showing that much, it looks like you used bearings that were too big. the old ones are deffinatly trashed, i bet if you look all the rest, they are like that too. what you should do is measure the crank with a good set of dial calipers or micrometers in a couple of different places( they should all be about the same measurement, the book will give you run out specs) and compair specs in your book. then order the new ones and some bearing clearnace checking stuff (forget its proper name, but it is a string of silly putty like stuff that you put in the bearing tighten it down then compair the thickness of the squished silly putty to the chart and get your bearing clearnace). then you need to re-hone that cylender(doing them all would probably be good since you have to pull the bearing caps anyways.... the honing will help the piston reatian just the right amount of oil to be proproly lubed), most cylenders i've seen have at least a little amount of honing left. then finally install your new rings and you are done.

Hey parts have become so consistant in their sizes that I have quit using plastigage all together. Maybe if I were building a 1/4 mile engine. But the trusty old 4.2? No, hell no in fact.
About here I would measure a journal or 2 and see where I was then I think I would go for new bearings of that size. Using only the bottoms of the mains. I would NOT ADVISE a new guy to hone the cylinders! I would only advise scratching by hand. Then add a new piston to the one cylinder and put her back together. Heck that should get him back on the road for a long while.
If I were to do all the pistons then I would want a new cam and everything. The guy has to stop somewhere. Or not.
We are all different, with a few different ideas. I'd go cheap or all the way.
