Sort of a workaround more than a solution, but yes, you can do that.

That kind of what I figured but at the price I got it, you can't really beat it.

now you need a back one.

double locked is nice. i idled through drifts friday night where i would've had to gun it and run all squirrelly before - even with the rear closed...although sometimes a good 4wheel slide is half the fun

unhook the wiring and your breather vent. undo the 6 bolts on each side that hold the axleshafts to the diff flanges. undo the one bolt on teh front crossmember. undo the two bolts at the mounts (these bolts are in the vertical plane). then drop it out. now you have to remove teh inner axle stubs from the housing. a slide hammer or puller is nice to pop them out since there is a loose retaining clip holding them in. plan on replacing the clips. pop off teh front cover, and have at it.

Easier said than done!

Especially getting it back in, and ESPECIALLY if you try to do it by yourself!

Also- the driver's side stub shaft (ADD) is held in by a couple of small bolts, not a clip.

You also have to disassemble the whole ADD mechanism, which can be a bit of a pain. A sturdy 7/16" socket can usually break the male Torx looking bolts loose (I bought a single 7/16 impact socket for just that purpose, the regular ones usually split). Then you have to pry the little tiny stub out of the diff. I use a couple of screwdrivers to do that, but again, its easier said than done.

If you're feeling queezy about it, bring the diff up to me and I'll help you. I've done a handful of them.

it really is not that bad.

you need to bulk up skater boy. it isn't that heavy.

okay the outer half on the ADD side is not in with a clip. it has those huge torx bolts that you will strip if you do not put an impact to it to really get good contact on the head. the inner half still has the clip and you need to get it out.

You also have to disassemble the whole ADD mechanism, which can be a bit of a pain.

i did not have any trouble with this either. you just have to pay attention to how it fits together, so you can install it the same way.

A sturdy 7/16" socket can usually break the male Torx looking bolts loose (I bought a single 7/16 impact socket for just that purpose, the regular ones usually split).

HUH?? why not buy the right tool? i have torx bits that go that big. i got them in a kit at sears.

Then you have to pry the little tiny stub out of the diff. I use a couple of screwdrivers to do that, but again, its easier said than done.

slide hammer and jaw pullers.

If you're feeling queezy about it, bring the diff up to me and I'll help you. I've done a handful of them.

quit scaring him. he can do it. but if you are offering, i'd be all over that. it is way faster when you know what the hell you are doing and two people makes it nicer.

If it is not any inconvience to you I would love the help seeing as I've never been inside a front diff. before. I've rebuilt honda automatic trannies but that took awhile and I had a FSM for it. So if it's not really a problem that would be cool. Let me know.

Scott-

Chris- my offer stands. Let me know when you want to try to do it. If you're just bringing the diff over, it could be done pretty much any time I'm around. I'll PM or email you my number.

And if you've got a slide hammer, gear puller, and correct torx socket, bring those too. I'm not made of money like Scott, so I make do w/ what I've got.

And no its not really that bad, but its definitely easier if you've got someone to show you...

slide hammer rental is free at autozone. same with gear pullers. the torx are not expensive. especially not expensive since you already talked about ruining some regular sockets and buying an impact one.

I don't have an Autozone near me, I couldn't find the Torx sockets anywhere I looked (?), and I got the job done so I wasn't too worried about it.

Besides, you know I'm a cheapskate!

I'll bet you'll put more into your SAS than I've put into my all the mods on my Runner...

I'll get all the right tools eventually. It just takes time and money. I'm WAY ahead of where I was just a few years ago. Like when I did my SAS- my "fab tools" were a jig saw, a grinder, and a borrowed 110V welder.
