My Monty just up and died yesterday while I was cruising down the freeway. Mechanic says that the ECM is damaged and will need to be replaced. Was planning to send it to avpro ecm to have the work done.
Now for the question. Do we assume that the ECM failed simply because it is old or should we spend a lot of time and money searching for something that may have caused the failure? I read about the ISC thing and the possibility that this could damage the ECM.
I am inclined to assume it is the ECM that has failed on its own and have it replaced. I welcome any and all opinions for or against. Anything else other than the ISC should be checked?
Thanks

I seem to remember a post once that said bad spark plug wires could cause an extra load on the ecu. If you still have the original wires it might be worthwhile to get a new set. In your case it could also have just been the age and miles on the unit. Several folks have had to repair/replace the ecu recently--the 3 electrolytic capacitors get old and start leaking acid on the circuit board, next thing you know, it fries or dies. Mine fried, so I bought a used one from a junkyard, I replaced the capacitors as a precaution. So far, so good. Keep us informed of what happens, and good luck.

It might be the crank angle (photo optical thing) sensor. I don't Know the test for this but getting the module for around $125 from CarQuest or other reputable dealer who carriers STANDARD BRAND electrical part,,,and they have to look it up in the big book ,,,not on the screen.
Very IMPORTANT and MOVE fast...There is a 90-91 federal emissions ( no egr) rebuilt ECU on EBAY ,,,,and the guy give really good diagnostic suggestions. READ what he says before spending the big bucks. There is a rebuilder place in Houston you send yours with two day turnaround,,,NCM I think. Dave , The Junk Yard Dog of Sacatomato
