Sorry, all I could find was a pic of my slightly crushed-in gas tank after I swapped it out for a new one.

Toyota said get the job done here, pay for it and we will see what can be done.............uhhhhhh.......NOT!!!!!
I 'll deal with it or get tips on the repair from you guy's.

Consider yourself lucky. Mine reads half full when its empty. As you are driving the gauge slowly goes up and down in a loop-de-loop path. I tried the EL010-99 fuel calibration and it make things only slightly better. At some point I should get all the TSB's posted on the web. I've ordered a TSB version of the fuel sender and I'll try that...

I performed this Service Bulletin and after a few tanks, the gauge has gotten a bit better. Don't ask me why. I ordered the parts for EL010-00 but they are back ordered. Those of you who already replaced the sender might want to find out which sender was put in, the fixed one or just another inaccurate one. Here are the details of TSB EL010-99. If anyone wants the details of any of the others, let me know because I have all of the ones that apply to the '99.

FUEL GAUGE HORIZONTAL CALIBRATION PROCEDURE

'99 & '00 4Runner
Introduction
When replacing the meter circuit plate (or) inclination sensor, you must perform the following calibration procedure to ensure proper operation of the Fuel Gauge. This procedure supplements the diagnostic steps for the combination meter.
Applicable Vehicles
-
1999 and 2000 model year 4Runner.
Repair Procedure
1.
After replacing the meter circuit plate or inclination sensor, move the vehicle to a level location. (A surface with an inclination no greater than ?0.5?is the target flatness.)
2.
With the ignition switch in the "OFF" position, press and hold the trip reset button.
3.
Continue pressing the trip reset button while turning the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
4.
Within 5 seconds of turning the ignition switch "ON", release the trip switch, press the trip switch 3 times, and on the third press hold the switch for 5 seconds. The buzzer will sound for 1 second at 800 HZ.
5.
After the buzzer stops, release the trip switch.
6.
Press the trip switch one more time and hold for 5 seconds. Once more, the buzzer will sound for 1 second at 800 HZ.
7.
The calibration process is completed.
HINT: If in the operation of step 6, the buzzer sounds higher than that of step 5, turn the ignition switch to "OFF" position and repeat the setting procedure from step 2.

I've calculated my mileage and just use numbers to give me a reading. The fix seems like a boatload of work especially
if both the sender and dash have to be messed with.
My gauge drops like a stone but I know the truth is in the numbers. Actually , I could just cover the gauge with tape. Kenny s>

I agree. I use my trip meter most of the time too. When I get near 300 miles I know I need to stop for gas. The problem is when wheeling the gas mileage goes to he# and all bets are off. I just got the TSB sender, bracket and gasket. They do mount the parts differently than pre TSB. I'll post pics when I do the install in the next few days.

One thing I learned is that these parts do supercede the old ones. If you went into the dealer and said, "My fuel sender is broke," it would automatically get the TSB version. For those that have had parts done, double check your invoices that the parts are as follows:

83320-35590 sender
77203-35461 tube
77169-60010 gasket (same)

Total: $181 cha-ching

You would need both the send and the tube replaced to get the benefit of the TSB. If things still aren't right then the Fuel Guage calibration needs to be done as described above. We'll see how things turn out...

Ok I swapped my sender unit. We'll see if it helps. Not all the special order parts are really necessary to effect the TSB. You can skip the pickup tube and gasket and modify the originals. http://www.larsdennert.com/4runner/fuelsender I'm hoping my cluster isn't goofed up. It may be even though the TSB doesn't call for a replacement on mine.

Ok, so I've run the first tank of fuel through since doing the TSB fuel sender. Here are the results for mileage vs. indicated fuel level:

95 miles 3/4 tank
180 miles 1/2 tank
275 miles 1/4 tank (but then returned to almost 1/2 tank in 10 miles)
295 miles 1/4 tank (10 more miles and it went back to 1/4 from 1/2)
315 miles Warning light first came on. Level flucuated between light on and 1/4 tank during short distance driving.
335 miles E tank and vehicle died on the freeway. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
Added two gallons of fuel and then drove to the gas station adding another 16.5 gallon for a total of 18.5 gallons. I guess the tank does hold 18.5 with the TSB. Mileage was 18.1 which is a bit low. I usually get over 19.

Hope this helps some one in diagnosing this TSB a bit.
