I have been searching all over the Web and hear conflicting stories about Optima Yellow and Red Top Batteries. I have a 91 Toy, 22re, stock alternator and a WARN 8000lb winch. The original battery just can't handle the winch so I was thinking of buying the Yellow Top. Is this the right battery? Or should I get the Red Top.
Thanks in advance!!

Yellow I've had it in my truck for over a year and a half. I'm running a big system, Driving lights, fog lights and handles the load very well. I can crank my system for over one hour and still have 11.5 volts to start the truck. I've also had a yellow top in my Camaro for over 2years great there too. Jed

I have had both the red and yellow top in my 4Runner(not at the same time)... I think I ran the red one in to the PS pulley on my rig.. the red top have a little more voltage and a little more CCA.. matter of fact my red top was proven to have something like 1300 CCA after a year of service.. I think that is 400 more than the manufacture claims.. I have a yellow top in there now, I haven't had the CCA checked since i bought it but it does fine.
One thing you might take into consideration is that the red tops have a 3 year FREE replacement while the yellow only have one year..
the blue tope are the same as the yellow or red depending on the part #.. I think the blue top with the dark gray housing is the same as the red top. and the blue top with the light gray housing is the same as the yellow top.. they just have screw on terminals one them..

red top has longer warranty...
trust me... had both. doesnt make a diff.
get a higher output alternator. and just make sure you let the batt rest between winching...

I've run both batteries. The specs on the Optimas are very confusing, because they keep changing them. There used to be rated pretty high, but then they modified them and lowered the CCA and the capacity. I was told several different stories including that the new parent company required them to lower the specs for some reason, or that they no longer use virgin lead in thier batteries.
Now that I've looked at their specs, it looks like they changed back to the old ratings. So, I'll bet some of the batteries with the lower ratings are still on store shelves. Avoid any yellowtops with CCA ratings of 650. The orginal and current yellowtop rating is 750 and that is plenty to work a winch. The yellowtop and red capacity and CCA is pretty close, but the yellowtop has a slight advantage and will last much longer when repeatedly discharged. But it's also much more expensive than a red top.
