What do you tow with your Trooper? #417980 03/15/04 04:14 PM

I am considering an upgrade to a newer trooper (92 and above) and am wondering what the towing capacity of the 3.2L V6 is. What do you tow? I have a pop-up camper that refuses to be pulled by my '90 2.8L This is the primary reason I am ungrading to begin with.

Thanx!!

I've done tons of towing with my 93 troop.

I usually trailer my hobie cat behind it on a heavy trailer, total weight about 1500 lbs I'd say. No problems.

Some other things I've towed include a 3500lbs sailboat from Raleigh to Key West, 17.5 hours straight and 6 stops for gas. Stopping was a bit hairy, but once you got her up to speed she kept up no problem.

Towed a 7500lbs building + triple axle flatbed trailer up a very steep hill, and through some woods.

I am very impressed with the towing capabilities on my troop. One of the reasons I love it.

Oh the owners manual says that the towing rating on the trooper is rated to 5000lbs. I think thats a bit much practically speaking. If you wanted to do no more than 45mph then 5000 lbs, but if you want to do 60+ on the highway then 3500 is where its at, and thats guzzling a lot of gas.

Yeah... I thought about it (The 3.4 swap) I stressed over it and finally worked up a spreadsheet of the cost involved. I may eventually do it, but since the Troop recently became my DD, I need something a bit more dependable for the long trips, and since it would cost almost $3,000 for the swap, I can get a nice troop for a little more.

I LOVE my '90 and will keep it if at all possible.

Body Damage is Cool
I towed a 3/4 ton chevy up a hill Monday. Guy had both front calipers locked up. I told the guy not to drive it, but once I got him out of my neighbor's driveway, he drove off in a cloud of tire smoke.

Other than that, largest thing I've towed was a Kawasaki mule on a 10' trailer and a 16' trailer with a 14' trailer loaded on top of it.

Just pulled a 3000 pound Land Rover on a 500 plus mile trip. This is an '02 Trooper with the 3.5 so I can't speak for the 3.2. I was very impressed with the towing capability of the truck. Kept up with highway traffic at 60 to 70 mph with no problem.
