Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi,

Just wanted to poll the forum, what is your average gas mileage if you have a 4X4 22RE?

I get about 18 MPG on average. Is this right? I feel like I should be getting more.

Thanks,

Rich

Was getting about 19 mpg with factory stock head and slightly tricked short block. Switched to a Street RV head from Engnbldr that had the original 270 cam and oversized SS valves etc, and jumped up to 21 mpg. Since installing the "Gen2" reworked engine he concocted Ive gotten 23 mpg consistantly since May of last year. I do concede around December it dropped to shy of 22 mpg average...but thats standard around here with wintermix in the tanks.

I normally get between 20-22 mpg running 32" tires. When I run my spare set of 31's, mileage increases 1-2 mpg. I'm pretty happy w/ the mileage especially since I got several hundred pounds worth of armor and a full toolbox in the bed.

'87 4runner on 33's with 4.88's, but figured I'd chime in. I get anywhere between 15 and 20mpg on the interstate (15 going between 80 and 90mph, 20 going between 60 and 65), and usually average about 17 around town depending on how I drive.

Mine is virtually identical to that, on 35s and 5.29s.

With my 32s and engine mods, but stock gears, I average low to mid 20s. Cruising flat country to the beach I got 27 once with my worn 31s.

I have always been surprised because I really don't drive that conservatively

I get about 18, too...basically stock with 30" ATs (though I do have a bed cap which supposedly costs you an mpg or 2).

I also feel like I should get better mileage...or maybe just wish I got better mileage.

I've done a few things to try to squeeze out a few more mpg. Some of which worked (like unfreezing my parking brake ), but most of which didn't (like adjusting valves, cleaning the TB, checking TPS, etc.).

My engine seems to run fine, though. Starts up without touching the gas pedal...can idle without a problem at 500 RPM (for some reason my truck idles at 750 RPM most of the time...except when i first start it if it's already warm...then it hangs out around 500 RPM).

One of these days, I'll test my O2 sensor (though I've never had a code come up...and my spark plugs look like i've got a good fuel/air mixture). And, I'm thinking I might need new spark plug wires...I get a lot of ignition noise in my CB. Maybe those will help. Prolly not, though.

Prolly I am just in denial that I still drive like I did when I owned an Acura.

are you remembering to correct for bigger than stock tires?

my tires are only an inch over stock, and it throws off my odometer by about 5%. i didn't realize my tires were bigger than stock when i bought my truck and thought i was getting worse gas mileage than i really was.
