RUSTED CALIPER PINS #420594 03/19/04 05:36 PM

Hey guys,

Just did new rotors and repacked everything up front...trying to do new pads but the pins that hold the pads in are rusted bad. Tried to pound them out with no luck and am looking for other tricks! Would it be safe to heat them with a torch or would this wreck the caliper pistons/brake fluid??

Try cleaning the rust off with a wire brush

I would try soaking them overnight in Liquid Wrench or some other penetrating oil first to see if that loosens them up.

it sounds like he cannot get them out to start with. i always grease mine before i put them in. ford sells a special grease just for their pins althought the pins on my 89 bronco were a lot different.

I soaked them with penetrating oil last night....I'll try the wire brush....no opinions on the torch?

I just did mine a couple weeks ago. What should have been about an hour job, took several hours and was a PITA! I used a lot of PB Blaster. Make sure you hit the pins a couple times after spraying them, the vibration seems to help work the penetrating spray in. I used a punch and I was careful not to 'mushroom' the end of the pin. It seemed to help to hit the pins from both sides. Once the pin moved a little, I soaked it and was able to finally remove it. My calipers were replaced a few years ago, so I don't know why the pins are so hard to remove.. good luck, they'll come out eventually..clean the pins and use lots of penetrating oil.

I meant try brushing some of the rust of before beating on them.

These things weren't budging so I torched em....worked good, you just have to be real careful that you don't get too close to the piston boots...I just kept spraying them with water. Anyway I got it all back togather with the proper anti-seize and it seems to be working great!! Thanks for the advice!!

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I live where they salt the roads and my pins were rusted solid. Now way of getting them out in one piece. I tried penetrating oil to no avail. I ended up breaking them off and using a center punch to pop them out. I now use anti seize on them .

put "never sieze" on them... its a silver liquid kinda stuff comes in a small silver can with a brush type thing to apply it...

i put it on my pins and have never had any trouble since, you may also want to spend the $5 and get new pins if you bent or mushroomed yours taking them out.

i also put the never sieze on my lug nuts every time i have them off. stuff works excelent and makes it so they dont rust on.

just dont get it on your clothes because it wont!! come out
