Getting the Wheeling Fever

Would anyone know what the symptems are of a bad fuel pump or fuel sending unit? I am still having problems with my 99 Rodeo. I still get the surging sometimes on start up and I suspect that my fuel guage isnt reading correctly. Gas mileage is still down and so far no more CEL's except for the once after i replaced the back 02 senosrs. It came up with a code for bank 1 system lean. Cleared the code and it hasnt come back on yet.(knock on wood). Im going to be moving long distance in a week and was concerned about being stuck in the middle of nowhere if my fuel pump or something dies. Thanks for the previous help.

quick easy and cheap to change fuel filter. symptoms are like what you describe. i think it's on the inside of the frame rail under the driver's seat. can't hurt and may help. my experience is when the pump goes, it just won't start after shutting it down. they don't usually quit while it's running. sometimes you can get it restarted by giving the tank a big whack with a rubber hammer, but you'll only get one restart out of that method. also check the fuel regulator. if it goes bad you'll waste a lot of gas and it's easier to change than the pump (which is in the tank!)

p.s. if you have more than 100k miles on your rodeo, pick a nice warm weekend and change the fuel pump when the tank is almost empty. if you don't, it WILL quit on a cold snowy day in february just after you filled the tank so you could leave in 20 minutes for grandma's house. coincidentally, this will also be the only time you have off all winter and the only time the kids were ready to go when you got back. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

I have already changed the fuel filter and it didnt make any difference. I'll check the regulator. After that i dont know. Im out of ideas. Maybe have to break down and take it in to the dealer. The engine sounds alot different after doing the intake and 02 sensors. I think it sounds like it is idling too high but i dont know anyone close by with a rodeo to compare it too. Thanks for the help. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

I have finally got moved and settled in i think and was able to get my 99 Rodeo into the shop to have the fuel pump/sending unit replaced. Did that this morning and it looks like it has fixed the inaccurate guage propblem but it is still surging on start up sometimes. Im lost. I have no idea what else it could be. There doesnt seem to be a driveability problem but it is annoying. Fuel filter had already been replaced. Does anyone have any ideas? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> Michelle

I am having the some of the same problems with my 98. I started off with a T-code P1171 which was running lean under accel. I am about to change my filter this weekend and see if that is the problem. I noticed a decrease in MPG and loss of power as well. I thought it was my air filter (open cone filter) which was really dirty. I cleaned the filter, MAF, and EGR valve. I then cleared the code and so far it hasn't appeared. I now have ordered a diagnostic tool to help me targeting the problem. I can't keep taking my rig into the shop. I'll let you know once the scan tool is in place and what the diagnosis is. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

OK...the shop replaced the fuel pump. I assume they drained and cleaned out the fuel tank also...that is good. I have seen moisture/water in the gas..do many stange things to a engine...
You say is drives Ok...but surges during idle now and then? (not all the time?) How about high speed, with a constant speed say 60mph....any surging ??
I also assume it is showing NO codes ??? Did the shop say everything is fine???

Well I took the MAF off and cleaned alot of the dirt/dust and yeah you are probably right about the oil. It just dawned on me that I haven't performed a decent tune up in a few thousand miles. Tomorrow I'll be doing this and see what else I can find. The symptoms are: Engine really sounds like it is struggling to get up to 60 and maintain when coming to a hill. Is this characteristic of an engine running lean? How do I cure this? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I also assume it is showing NO codes ??? Did the shop say everything is fine??? Yes the shop drained the tank etc and everything seems ok. No codes coming up. This surging problem has been ongoing for a few months now. It seems to usually surge on start up only with no specific time frame or reason. Can happen when vehicle is cold or after it has been driven for a bit. As soon as you put it in gear it stops surging and it rarely surges for more than 4 times in one start up. I have tried different gas, injector cleaner with no effect. Could it be an electrical glitch or a sensor or something? Michelle <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
