Getting the Wheeling Fever

I've noticed noise coming form the transfer case this winter. It's getting warm enough to pull it and see what happening in there. I've had the jeep for quite a while but never pulled the TC. Any cautions, suggestion, before I go tearing into it? I've been told to make sure to have support for the trans. before dropping the skid plate. Oh, yeah, I'll be doing this solo.
