Those of you that have white lettering on the sidewall of the tire, do you have the letter facing toward the frame or exposed to the public and why? My Trooper came with the lettering facing the frame. In years past, I often thought the lettering, and so called whitewalls for car tires, were just plain ugly, so when replacing tires I would have them placed facing the interior. I can see, for practical reasons, with the lettering facing the frame, if the lettering gets scraped up, the outward appearance of the tire still looks good.

Sadly I had to get rid of my 1996 Trooper 3.2L due to a rusted frame.

My white lettering is facing out only because that is the way they were when I got them. I when I get new tires, any white lettering is going on the inside.

Both of my rigs and my girls car have a nice mix of both.

I seem to have a knack for always finding sharp things to puncture our tires with. When I go to replace them, if the guy at the nearest garage doesn't care to check how the other tires are mounted, I don't care how he mounts them. To us if all four wheels have good traction, are the same size, and hold air, we are good to go.

I do admit the blackwall side does look better, white reminds me of my grandfathers trashed beyond resto Dodge Dart, "someday it could be yours" Love the old guy styling. Just an opinion.

I have mine facing in. I just like how good it looks when you spray that black, shiny stuff on them.

I've seen Troops with the letters out and they look good, too, but not for me.

Depends on the truck. Mine is painted white and the raised white letters look good out. Also to me it depends on how much bling bling crap you have on your truck. I keep mine clean, I was really surprised that I put the "Only in a jeep (yeah whatever!)" sticker on mine.

But yeah, to each his own.

That's: 'Only in A WHAT? - Yeah... Whatever!'

Anyway, I agree with Joe. (OMG! Did I just say that??? )
It really IS a matter of personal taste, and it DOES depend upon the vehicle.

Like Joe's Trooper, my Rodeo is white as well... and personally, I happen to like seeing the 'Cooper Discoverer STT' lettering. --- On the other hand, if my Rodeo were green... I'd probably have the lettering turned in.

Cheers!

Personally I prefer blackwall out. My father-in-law however has always preferred white out. The way he tells it he had a patient whos wife would always hit the curb with the tire and scratch the rims. The next time he put on new tires he put whitewalls out. His wife hit one curb with the whitewall and scuffed it. She said "that looks ugly scraped up like that." and from then on she never hit another curb.
For me, a curb is just another fun obstacle to climb. So blackwalls out!!!

When I bought my current tires, the tire shop put white letters out. I didn't care either way... but admittedly, I thought they looked pretty good like that once I washed the blue crap off.

Well, over the past 25k miles, I have spent quite a bit of time on the trail. From all of the rock/dirt/etc abbrasion off-road, the white letters are now all scuffed up and barely white anymore. They look kinda gross even after getting washed. So with that in mind, I am requesting black letters out with my next set. The white letters, IMHO, look really good when they are new.... but they just can't stay looking good on an off-road used vehicle.

I suppose if you get your vehicle and it already has white lettering on it, then your only option is to turn them in to the frame or buy new tires if you donÆt like it.

But once you get new tires, then just choose tires without the white lettering! Take carsdirect.com for example, SUVÆs on there typically have the standard black walled tires, but you can always check the optional box for different tires that have white lettering, designated by the OWL (Outlined White Letters) you can also see this designation on tirerack.com.

I believe you can get the same tire either with or without the lettering in most cases.

As far as my feelings go, I specifically went out and bought Pirelli Scorpions with the White lettering, they look great and give my Trooper a more æready for off highwayÆ appearance, and even after 70,000 miles the lettering still looks great when washed and the tires dressed, in fact I am going to get the same again when I replace them.

I have never seen whitewall tires on an SUV, that would be a trip! I guess it may work on a tricked out Escalade but I think an Isuzu would look pretty goofy!

Most tires with white lettering have the white lettering on one side, and standard black on the other side. Its a matter of which side you get placed out, not a matter of ordering tires either with or without the white letters. I can't tell which your post was saying.... but it reads like you can either get tires with white, or tires with black.

Pirelli Scorpion AT's were the tires I had before moving up to MT's. Mine were just as I described above, white on one side, black on the other. It reads in your post like you specifically bought a set with just white letters, not that you had the white faced out???

Must not run many trails that exercise your sidewalls then. I can't think of any other explanation for your letters still looking good after that many miles. The Scorpions were good tires for an AT for the 35k miles I owned them.... but they weren't that tough.
