Good backtracking, Sherlock. Full manual control has its risks, eh? Are you going to provide manual gates for the shifter, or enforce shifting order with coded logic?
Nice patch, fabbing up a retainer strap.
So did you swap in the replacement or just fix this one and call it good?

I'm keeping the original tranny in. It's got fewer miles on it and the case is a lot cleaner and corrosion free on the outside. I hope to get the electronics for the shifter working this time around, so the logic will do the lockout. --Dan

Did you ever get the Volvo shifter to work ?
We've a few AMC builders that would enjoy knowing the 'ins' and 'outs' .
thanks -

talk about digging out old threads For once someone used the search function... we need to praise that kind of action, not mock it.

Not for gear selection, just P -> D. I'm still using the rotary switch. The problem is it works good enough I don't get motivated to re-do it. Too many other things to spend the time on. Really, the biggest problem with the Volvo shifter is that it only goes to D. You can't shift to '3' or '2'. The problem with that is you don't get compression braking in 'D' unless you're in 3rd gear. Kinda sucks for offroad. Shift down to '3' and you get braking in 2nd, shift to '2' and you get it in first. This part isn't electronic. You need to move the shift selector in the tranny. I do think it could be made to work electronically with a servo on the selector along with the floor shifter. The shifter (the Volvo would work good this way) would select P->D, then the servo would move the selector in the tranny to the D/3/2 positions as you shift the tranny so you can always maintain compression braking. It's one of those things I get fired up about once in a while, but then bigger things take over. --Dan

Thanks Dan - Our www.amc-list.com members want to run the aisin AW4 / RWD transmissions for driver / street AMC cars behind 4.0 > 360 - 401 4V V8s - a shifter that will allow full shifting 1-4 is the Topic. List Moderator Frank S. has built a '64 Rambler Wagon with a 4.0/ Aisin / a rotory selector - early 'E' jag IRs. I've purchased an A-761E 2004 LS430 Lexus 6spd with converter off eBay - has a black box on the side - going into a Gremlin. Engine: '05-'06 Toyota 4.7
