Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a 1994 v6 pickup. I filled up with engine oil and started for a trip to California. (Dallas to Los Angeles). When I got to California, I checked the dipstick and the oil level was way below the minimum level. I felt like a dipstick for not checking the oil level during the 1500 mile trip. I still got 20 miles to the gallon on this trip. I was mostly doing the speed limit, around 70-75 mph.

My question is where did all that oil go? My truck eats up a quart of oil every thousand miles. Is this normal? There is no external leak. I don't have an oil puddle where I usually park. Do I have a leak somewhere else? My truck likes to eat coolant too. I have to refill the coolant resevoir every once in a while.

Roll Me Over
FIRST, prior to doing anything drastic:
Check for external leaks.
Crawl under there and look for wet areas.

I'd maybe think about doing a leak down test to see where it's being consumed.
I'd guess that much being consumed might be the rings.
Does it smoke much?
Have you done a compression test?
Power loss?

but with the coolant being consumed as well as oil it might just be a Head Gasket.
Hope that helps
Jed

Body Damage is Cool
My 22RE has been doing this for at least three years. It is the valve stem seals letting oil by them and if you check the oil frequently, should not poresent a real problem. Just keep an eye on the dipstick, or you may as well do a valve job and replace the seals.

Yabut, that does not explain the coolant. Sounds ugly.

V6, oil and coolant loss? Sounds like the infamous headgasket.

Have you already had your free headgasket replacement? I think 94 was in that recall.
