No spark, replace computer, no spark, replace coil and transistor no spark. Resolution #425024 03/27/04 11:05 PM

Subject line pretty much sums it up. My truck suddenly quit almost a month ago with total loss of spark. The computer appeared bad and it was sent to AvPro. They sent a replacement so they must have deemed it to be bad.

This didn't fix the problem.

The ignition transistor appeared bad and so it was replaced. The ignition coil was iffy so it was replaced. I still have no spark.

Any ideas on where to go from here? I don't see how it could be distributor related since the distributor is down-stream of the coil and there is no spark coming from the coil.

Any thoughts at this point are appreciated.

It sounds like the module inside the distributor. This is what everybody goes thru when it goes,, they buy the ECU, ouch.
Some of these modules are available with research , without buying the whole 500$$$ from the dealer.

I'm research all these modules to try to get part # so no one has to buy the whole dist . from salvage or dealer. The plastic of the mod cranks from age degedation, so junk yard one won't last long.
Keep in touch with me I'll try to find out more.

Also inspect the timing belt through the inspection cover. Same thing happened to me on my 93. Luckilly I inspected the belt first and found it broken.

Lloyd -- IsnÆt the distributor driven by the camshaft? If true why not just pop the distributor cap and see if the rotor turns? If it turns wouldnÆt that provide evidence that the timing belt isnÆt broken?

Timing belt was the first thing we checked. It looks to be fine. It only has about 5000 miles on it.

How could it be the distributor module if there is no spark reaching the distributor? I would think if it was the distributor that you would have spark from the wire coming off the coil, but have no spark at the plugs. Right? Or am I missing something here. I have so spark from the wire coming from the coil that is going into the distributor.

I'm thinking that maybe the computer from AvPro is not functioning properly. Apparently it is not sending the all OK signal. It's not sending error codes either, though.

The distributor performs two separate but related functions. One is to trigger the coil to spark this is the job of the ôdistributor moduleö. The other is to distribute said spark too the correct cylinder this is the job of the cap and rotor.

Well we borrowed another Montero from a fellow board member , pulled the computer out of that Monty, put it in mine and she fired right up. The rebuild of the ECM by AvPro did not correct the original problem. The computer was still not operating. I'll be sending it back to Florida again tomorrow morning.

Apparently AvPro checks the circuits that appear to be fried and were repaired but they have no way of verifying that the computer is operating as it should. In this case, there must be something damaged that they missed. Something to keep in mind if you have your computer refurbished. Especially keep this in mind if you get it back and your truck still won't spark. Don't assume it must be something else that is broken. Your ECM might still be dead.

It just came in the mail today. I'll try it out once we get a replacement ECU. Thanks.

BTW, I'm working on getting another, so if you need one again, just PM me.
