Hey guys, it's been a while (winter hybernation). So I know you can use stock rear packs for the front on a SAS. Who has done it, any words of wisdom?, I know some people have had clearance problems with the tie rod. I've tried to search but I haven't been able to narrow it down to what I need. I am grateful for any info/advice you can give.

Thanks,
Zach

Ive got this setup on my rig. So far they work great with no clearance issues. The drawbacks: Ive rebuilt the pack 5 times to get it right. It takes two sets of rear springs to make. If you break em, or wear em out there is no order it up and slap it in replacement. If you want to avoid these things you can go with the ranchos.

I run them on my '85, and you do have to go through a few iterations to get the spring rate and ride height right:

Rear to Front spring swap

Actually, with 2 full spring packs, keep one or both spare main load leaves as a spare. I did not use the 2nd set of main leaves, so in case it breaks, I carry the leaf in my truck on the trail.

I should have been more specific. Similar to Roger, I didn't use all the springs from both sets of spring packs. I ended up using 5 leaves on each side. The very bottom leaf I ended up using is a mystery leaf. When the suspension flexed, I was getting a kink spot near my axle perch so I pulled out the short bottom leaf that I had cut down from one of the longer extra rear leaves, and stuck in this fairly flat slightly thicker short leaf. Seamed to fix the problem.

As eveyone has said, rears alone won't cut it, they'll be way too soft. I used 3 pair of 2WD p/u rears to make my front pair, 5 leaves each. Still a little soft, but OK w/the RS9012 shocks set on 9 for the street. I'll add another leaf one day.

What eveyone didn't say, and you may or may not know, is that rears will move your axle forward 2", so it's better to get that all mounted before you install the x-over steering box.

Thanks for all the good info. Question about the Rancho's? They are lift springs for a Wagoneer, how much lift will it give the Toy? Maybe an easier Q is what size tire will I be able to run. At least 33's? It sounds like an easier setup aka more bolt in. Again any info is appreciated!

Thanks again,
Zach

Supposedly around 3", plenty to fit 33's.
Try a Search on "44044", that's the Rancho p/n.

Why use them ? They are very expensive, and made for a full size vehicle (read heavier) with a V8. I'd bet that would make for a stiff ride in a small, 4 cyl truck.

Deaver is working up some springs for Toyota also. We are currently getting ready to test a set on the Formula Toy #006. Getting better flex than I did with my All-Pro, 63 Chevy combo

I am happy with my Allpro 3" springs and at 199.00 they were cheeper than any thing else.
