I believe he was the first one to put a 4.3 in a Mits...even before Kary.

I don't think there was ever any doubt on that one Vic. It was one of the first writeups we had in the mitsu tech section
http://www.4x4wire.com/mitsubishi/projects/bob_shaw/ back in April of 2000.

Back ontopic, if you have manual hubs and they are "locked in", you can shift into 4hi while moving, on a genI. Is that where the confusion lies? The active trac on the genIIs is a different ballgame, and is beyond my humble experiences.

Yeah Phil, I wanted to install the Superwinch on the Gen II Monty and wanted to make sure not to shift to 4Hi with the hubs unlocked.
From what the people posted, seems likely to mess something up in the drivetrain so we might not install it anymore.
Thanks a lot for everyones input.

Yeah, if you have someone/anyone that might put the rig in any 4wd mode, with hubs unlocked, probably not a good idea to get them.

I have to admit, I'm not exactly sure what is gained by installing them. I didn't do any measurements after installing mine. The 1 thing I did notice was the steering seem to be easier/looser/freer (take your pick) with hubs unlocked. I believe what happens is 1 axle is disconnected with hubs unlocked. I didn't take that as a bad thing.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I would agree that shifting into 4wd with the hubs unlocked is not a good thing, but it shouldn't destroy anything. I don't see that anyone compendent enough to drive the car shouldn't be able to follow a simple instruction, " DON'T USE 4WD WITH THE HUBS UNLOCKED". As for me, the reduction in wear to the front drivetrain is well worth the inconvinence of having to get out and lock the hubs when needed.

Roll Me Over
*****
I have aisins on the front hubs(off an 83 monty) on my 95 SR. They fit fine. Yes I have attempted to shift to active trac(4hi) when the hubs were unlocked(by mistake)...not a good Idea unless you like to hear horrible grinding sounds . The cool thing about the active track system and manual hubs is that you can leave the hubs locked and simply shift in and out of 4wd at will and then when you feel like it, or your wheeling trip is over, You still have the option of unlocking them. I feel that manual hubs save the cv's and cv boots from wear when running cranked T bars as well as less rolling resistance in the front drivetrain when running in 2WD.

Hehehe, MJ, you don't know my family. I can just see it, "I swear we didn't use 4wd" or the typical "Dunno"
