JasonH is right. IMO 15 mpg out of an FJ80 is a pipe dream. I am getting a pretty consistant 12 mpg in my 62.

That is really too bad they get such poor mileage, I really like the big FJ's. But, with gas near or over the $2 point in most places, sub 15 mileage is unacceptable. My Trooper is okay, but the rust combined with the IFS are a real bummer. My wife thinks it is a waste, but I am going to have to do some serious cancer surgery on the Isuzu and probably do an SAS. If the stupid thing didn't run so well it would have been long gone. I can't even convince my wife to switch to the FJ, she likes here Discovery too much, even though the FJ would be less money and less finicky. Oh well, thanks for the info guys. Until gas prices can settle down, it looks like a big FJ is out of the question.

In the words of my buddy here at work who rides to lunch with me every day...
"This thing is big, it's slow, it's ugly, the interior has no room, the gas milage sucks, but I LOVE IT!"
That about sums up my feelings too.
I can live with the gas milage! I put about $30 every 5 days. Realistically, this is only about $1000 more a year in gas than what a Saturn uses ;-)

Since I have chosen to live in the mountains and not in the crowded valley, my commute is about 50 miles one way. For economic reasons I just can't afford sub 15mpg. I really do like the Cruisers, but I just can't afford to give OPEC and Uncle Sam that much money. I tried to convince my wife to trade the Rover in on the FJ, but she really doesn't want to give up her leather. If I worked closer to my house, it would be a no brainer, but the 100 mile round trip makes 10-15 mpg really expensive. I spend about $30 every three days and that is with 20 mpg. My Trooper is in a similar category as the FJ, except it is small, ugly, no room in the interior, and the gas mileage is okay. I can't say I love it, but I can tolerate it as long as it will keep running.

You could always convert it to Part-time 4 Wheel drive. I've heard one guy is getting 16-17 MPG (hwy).

It depends on the conversion you use. There are actual conversion kits that add a piece to the transfer case/center diff and adds manual hubs in the front. Then when you want 4WD you need to hit the Center Diff Lock switch and turn the hubs. If the Center diff isn't "locked" then no power goes to the front.
Another way would be to add manual hubs to the front and then removing the front drive line. Then you'd need to drive with the center diff locked to get power to the rear wheels. But anytime you want 4WD or AWD you'd need to install front drive line again. With the Hubs unlocked and the center diff locked you'd essentially be driving in 2WD but you'd still be spinning your front drive shaft which would still require some power.
One thing to keep in mind if you didn't already know this is that the FJ80 is a full time AWD not full time 4WD. To get 4WD like your 4Runner you have to lock the center diff. The center diff lock on a FJ80 just puts you into 4WD.

It is just like my Land Rover, but I have to admit, I really like the AWD. My Rover is a real snow porsche and I don't suppose the FJ would be any different. I would have to guess that ARB makes a locker for the '92 FJ, since they are used all over the world.
