I was right...that I wasn't right. Heh heh. Every diesel vehicle that I've owned has had the fuel screw turned by someone, either to the point it didn't smoke much at all, or smoked like a train most of the time. The Isuzu manual, the Robert Bently manual for VW, and any Chilton/Haynes manuals I have read all don't give ANY info on how to set up the pump. I realize it takes proper equipment to get it 100%, but you would think that they could tell you something to at least get it in the same ballpark. Oh well. So all I can do is guess. Until this forum, where there are people that have a clue about this stuff, and it's application to the great Isuzu diesels.
Can anyone confirm that JLemonds comments about removing the cap on the side of the pump, and removing the spring and shim, if it applies to my pump on the 223? Or has tried it? I'm always game for improvements.

If there is anyone whose answer you can rely on it is Jerry. He taught for Isuzu for a long time and probably knows the most about Isuzu engines of anyone on the board.

YES, I followed Jerry's recommend. It is like putting an advance curve kit in a distributor in a gas engine.
My butt dyno didn't measure anything.
pump advance is place to make power gains. Jerry has a effective and safe method, that does not require the dial indicator.
the screw you are talking about, is it large and at top of rear? It that a cover screw?

Regarding the previous message posted below, I did finally remove the spring inside the cold start advancer on the injection pump and I'll have to say the engine did accelerate better up through first and second gear. Great tip, JLemond!
Right now I'm in the getting ready to replace the clutch setup in my 86 Trooper TD. Anyone have any tips to save some time for this job if I don't have a garage? How do you get to the top two back bolts in the tranny without pulling the motor out?

I just tried the plunger-spring removal thing today, but didn't feel any difference either. As Jerry pointed out, it certainly would be more noticeable with a sticking pump, rather than a proper-working pump. Fuel timing increase should make a bit of difference, though. Which is what I'm going to do, when I get enough time (better be soon timing belt is long overdue).

Hi All, Here is one of the pump off my old C223-T engine. I can't seem to find the cap you described at all for cold start left side ![[Linked Image]](http://www.web2b.cable.nu/d_pump/images/IMG_1899.jpg) right side ![[Linked Image]](http://www.web2b.cable.nu/d_pump/images/IMG_1898.jpg) Pump number ![[Linked Image]](http://www.web2b.cable.nu/d_pump/images/IMG_1889.jpg)

THIS PUMP DOESNT USE ONE OF THE COLD START DEVICES , IT IS NORMALLY MOUNTED RIGHT UNDER THE TACH SENDING, UNIT , THIS PUMP IS MORE LIKE THE PUMPS THAT WAS USED ON THE EARLY IMARK ENGS , AND AS ZACHERY MENTIONED IF THE ADVANCER IS WORKING CORRECTLY YOU WONT REALLY GAIN ANYHTING FROM TAKING IT OFF THE PUMP , THE PROBLEM WAS A LOT OF THEM TENDED TO STICK AND WOULD CAUSE A PART THROTTLE BOG ON A COLD ENG , OTHER THAN THAT THEY DID FINE , AND TRYIGN TO FIND PARTS FOR THE ADVANCER AND THE PUMP IN GENRALL IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE DIFFICULT, JERRY

I wonder if the intended market determines whether the cold start device is present - as he is from Australia, it's likely not needed. My Japan-sourced 4JB1-T does not have one, either, although I wish it did for the Minnesota winters (not sure if it's of the same design, though).

Thanks Jerry for the info. By the way there isn't much of these engines left at where I live either, looking for part is almost impossible as well. There are quite a few 2.8L and 3.1L around though Acy76: I just went under my truck that has in imported engine from Japanse and there isn't one in there either.
By the way, I am going to send this pump over to Canada for someone but it seems a bit too much for the postage fee. Which company did you use when you got your bonnet from NL?
