I re-geared to 4.88 and still run 31's. I love it except for highway. My rpms are not to bad when cruizing 70, 3100 but I'm actually only doing 63 or 64 mph corrected for regearing. If I actually want to do 70, my speedo says closer to 78 and rmps are now closer to 3600. It just takes me a little longer to get where I going when I'm cruizing the runner.

I ran 35's for years with my 90 IFS and 3" body lift. Chopped some fender up front. It wore out the idler arm and I've had to do CV boots. I'd guess that stuff goes after 14 years anyhow though. Switched to 4.88's about 2 months ago from the 4.10s and its very nice on the highway and in the mud too. Around town on 33's it's a big differance for the better. I use 36's off in the mud and it's a nice combo. Theres not much to flex on in FL so it just about never hits fender and works fine for mud/water from what I've done. Just make sure you get the right offset for your wheels or 35's will put a nice polish on your swaybar when you turn. As far as strength from the IFS parts, I've had no real problems. Go for it.

Fuel mileage is more a function of frontal area and speed than it is engine RPM.
Taller truck with wider tires = more frontal area = more wind drag = worse mileage.
Speed is even worse because it is squared. For example crusing at 80 requires 30% more power than crusing at 70.
Combine both of these and you will take a truck that out of the box did high teens and you should not be surprised by a truck that will do mid teens.
One more thing. Maximizing mileage will minimize performance. I am a big fan of low gears and would put money on that fact that it has less effect on mileage than people give it credit for.

Well put! I found lower gears help around town mpg at the expense of freeway but overall, it remained unchanged or changed very little. It simply takes energy to fight the fixed drag forces as you have described and gears are not in those equations.
