Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have been having a problem with my keys getting stuck in the ignition cylinder for a few months. At first I thought it was the keys, but the don't seem overly worn or messed up. Is there something in the cylinder that could be messed up? Has anyone ever replace the key cylinder and if so, how hard is it. My wife has the truck this week and insists on leaving the key in the ignition because she can't get it out. I don't like this. Help.

Thanks

Automatic transmission? Does wiggling the shifter work? Could be that mechanism that keeps you from removing the key unless it is in park (or neutral)...

Good thought. I have a 5spd though. If I wiggle the key it pops out sometimes, although not always. It feels as though something is grabbing the key in the cylinder. I plan on removing it tonight and looking at it.

There is some graphite based lock lube available in a spray can. Could be it is just gummed up in there. Try using a non-residue safe-on-plastic spray cleaner on it and then some of the lube. Triflo is good too.

Thanks for the info guys. I pulled the ignition cylinder out last night and was able to pull the tumblers out. There is a small metal piece that moves out of the way when you put the key in. That piece was filthy and gummed up. I simply wiped the excess away and replaced the cylinder and the key moves in and out very easily now. I did end up lubing the cylinder with the lock lube / deicer when I was finished. I think I might get the lube from Toyota later.

Now just make sure the latte doesn't slosh over on the key again <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
