Well I have my auto sitting outside right here. I can give you a guess on the plugs and wire colors if ya want. And shoot a photo that way too.
BTW, I have been reading up at marlincrawler.com and he likes to change the ECU when he does this swap. I've heard it both ways, change or don't change, but Marlin seems to think you get more power from the motor when you change the ECU to manual. I don't have the budget for a new ECU though, so I'm glad to here yours is running strong. right? I know there are no smog issues though.
see ya, B.

All of the research I've done tells me that you get more power if you keep the exisitng ECU. Go figure...
It ran strong all weekend, but I'm having some other problems which are keeping the 4runner sidelined .

Great news about the ECU, but sorry about the other problems. I too have heard that the auto ECU's can work better. Something about more aggresive ignition time and such. Good luck, I'll pass along what I find out about the tranny wiring. B.

runningman----your bucking in the corners is typical of lockrites and manuals......a Detroit Soft-locker has less bucking.....and, of course, the automatic that you gave up makes all lockers pretty much transparent.

Hey Runningman. I finished mine today! Yipee! Finished except for the little stuff like interior and wires. Sure drives a lot better doesn't it. Haven't had it on the freeway yet though. Thanks for all the info, it really helped my job go smoother. Good luck on your truck, what again what wrong with it? Brian.
Oops, caught your other thread about it cutting out. I hope you got it squared away! B.

Hey guys,
I did this swap 2 years ago. Besides the heavy lifting, it was a pretty easy job. The clutch master mounting was the hardest (pedal bracket was already there for me). The ECU from an auto tranny has a more advanced timing curve because as you have experienced, the auto tranny is geared horribly and gives poor performance. Therefore, the compensation with the ECU. The truck with a 5 speed and auto ECU is quicker than a stock 5 speed truck. The real trick is wiring your reverse lights! I tapped into the wires that run from the ECU back on the passenger side to the reverse lights. Had to find them by using a voltmeter.
I am also going to make a kill switch out of the hotwired "neutral safety switch".
Enjoy!

In regards to the 4x4 light, pull your gauge cluster out and find the wire that plugs in to the back for the 4x4 light. tap into that wire with a new one and run it straight to the connector on the tranny (there should already be power from the existing wire). It is a negative ground, so when you shift it into 4wd, it grounds and the light comes on. Same thing with the reverse lights.
Good luck!

Are the two transmissions identical in length - any driveshaft issues?
So my hard parts list s/b: Trans, bell housing and mount Flywheel, throw-out bearing, clutch & pilot bearing Master cylinder, slave, hard line and pedal assembly What have I missed?????
Any special tools other than tranny jack?
If you have any tips not mentioned in doing the swap I'd appreciate hearing of it now. I'm seriously considering doing the swap while my motor is out.

The W-56 is around 1-5/8" longer than the auto tranny. I'm running 3" of sus. lift and was able to reuse my driveshafts without any issues. Might be a different story depending on how high/low your truck is. Your parts list looks good to me. You will want to add on the two bushings for the tranny shifter. Look here, http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/shifter/index.htmlI can't think of anything else that I haven't already posted. Creating holes in the firewall for the master cyl. was the hardest part for me . Take your time when you do it. If you have any more ?'s post here and I'll try to answer them. I want this thread to have all the info for auto to manual swaps. So people don't have to look everywhere for bits & pieces like I did.
