Got the truck back today, LSD installed and new brake cylinders and pads. Total bill ??

$1050.00

Got charged for everything from gasket maker ($19) to new brake line fittings ($8) taxes ($150) and 10 hours labout for the whole thing ($620)

The worst part, and what I need help with , is it SOUNDS LIKE SH$T

The LSD was used, and now there is a deafening whine under acceleration in 3rd through 5th gear.
The mechanic ( no, I'm NOT going back ) thinks it's the front and rear pinion bearings in the LSD. Anyone agree? I can't hear myself even think anymore !

Dude you got totally ripped on.

LSD install if you got the whole 3rd member would take like 2 hours max, and brakes are like a 2 hours job max also.

I bet if you put some POSI lube in it, it will quiet down.

Yup, used Mobile 75-90 synthetic...without friction modifier so far but that's coming...I can feel the chatter already. The mechanic said I wouldn't need the modifier unless i got that chatter around turns etc.

The previous owner of the LSD assured me it was fine in his vehicle. ( Pretty trustworthy guy too ) so maybe that rules out bearings. Could it be backlash ? I don't know if that was checked by the mechanic or not.

---------------

On a side note: Does anyone know my recourse if I did get ripped? I paid by visa..........
The original quote was 3-4 hours for the install. ( ok, 250$ sounded fine even if a whiz could do it in 2 hours ) The extra 6 hours came from ???? Quote : "Replace diff, rear brakes ( grinding down rusty backing plates ) wheel cylinders, bleed system, and make up lines"

Since you live in the "rust zone" the extra labor doesn't sound that bad. The part that you don't say is "did they call/talk to you" and get you to authorize the additional labor. If they did, then at that time you could have declined to have that work done.
The noise DOES sounds like Pinion bearings to me by your description, and no ammount of oil is going to fix that IF that is what it is.
My question would be this....did they replace the entire "third member/Pumpkin" or did they just replace the LSD in place of the open carrier. IF they replaced the carrier with the LSD then they did not set it up correctly. IF this is the case, driving it WILL DAMAGE IT.
More good news.

As per my email, all I can tell you that it was not making any noise when I pulled it (yes, it was my LSD). Unless it was somehow jarred in shipping, the only thing I can figure is they yarded it out of the housing and reinstalled it in your diff, and didn't set it up correctly.

They just replaced carrier with the LSD.
And, according to you they didn't set it up correctly. So what would you suggest they do if I demand they re-do it? Could you explain how it will harm the unit as is?

And yes, I authorized the brake work. They just didn't tell me it would be 6 hours of labour to do it.

EDIT: Just spoke to a longtime mechanic friend ( 30 yrs experience- 1500 miles away.. ) and he backed up Big Blue- get to a place that deals with rear-ends ASAP. He also mentioned didn't think it could be the pinion gears as they would be noisy at speed even with the foot off the pedal whereas mine are whiny only while loaded.

I'll post tomorrow , it's time...

First.. The LSD that you have...I know where it's from, and I know its just fine.
2. Excessive Backlash can sound like a bad pinion bearing, but unless your diff was noisey BEFORE you took it in, that is NOT it. NO IFS OR BUTTS!
3. A check that you can do is this. With the parking brake on tightly and the trans in neutral, get under the rig and turn the rear driveline. There should be some movement but not much as the side/pinion gears are held tight by the clutch packs. IF there is more than 1/4" movement DO NOT DRIVE IT.
4. If #3 is correct then it should be towed to a compatent shop for repairs. I would call the shop that did the work right away and givre them first chance to correct "their" mistake, and if you don't want to do that....then the only likely way you are going to recover any expenses is to take the first shop to court.
Possible causes;
1. They just didn't measure and set the backlash correctly.
2. They didn't check the backlash in 4 spots as you are supposed to and they screwed up when mounting the ring gear to the carrier. The ring gear has high spots that are changing the backlash due to debris under the ring gear.
3. NO OIL??????
4. They somehow managed to damage the pinion when they assembled the carrier to the housing. Longshot but??????
5. ????????????????????????
If driven under load while the backlash is off "alot" the ring and pinion can be damaged and they are ~$800.00USD!

I've set up a few hundred ring and pinions so I speak from experience, and I've taught professionals in this industry to do this also.
Sorry, but again...more good news.
