At least on their website, this Crosslander looks like an ideal 4x4 for those seeking max torque (355 ft lbs, turbodiesel) from a new $20k 4WD vehicle. It's also gussied up with silly things like a winch, snorkel, and more. Pretty cool if it pans out, huh? [ December 07, 2002, 12:05 PM: Message edited by: little_joe ]

Interesting, I'd be interested in it for a trail rig if it was a solid, reliable truck with support from the aftermarket. I definitely like it. Someone who lives near one of the dealers should go look at them and let everyone know what they think!

I'd sure like to find out what chassis it's based on. I brightened one of the front end pictures, though, and it almost looks like an IFS front end. Can anyone confirm this? I couldn't find any specs anywhere. Also, if someone could get this thing certified here in the states, how hard would it be to just buy a bunch of old left hand drive Toyota Landcruiser 70 series. You wouldn't have to develope anything just import them here and sell them. Probably would make a killing. I know I'd try to scrape something together to get one. Perhaps a nice left hand drive South American LC73 like this one would be nice.....

where did you find the specs on that? i couldn't find them on their website...those do look awesome...kinda like a defender 110. It does appear to have IFS...which sucks but oh well for $20,000 it looks pretty darn cool. There are two dealers in my state..one is 5 hours away and i am not sure where the other one is but i will try to find out.

What's wrong with just importing a right-hand drive vehicle, provided it's legal in your state? Afterall, when you're on the dirt, it doesn't matter if you're sitting on the right-hand or left-hand side! :-) In know the Nissan Skyline GTR sports car can be imported in right-hand drive (on the NHTSA list). I know any recent model import car will have to have both driver's and passenger's side air bags.

It's definitely IFS. Here's some more information on it: http://www.jipemania.com/plane/aro/aro-br-2002.htmYou can translate it here: http://babelfish.altavista.com/ (Choose Portuguese to English). [ December 07, 2002, 03:38 PM: Message edited by: phong ]

Shifting with the left hand. Frankly, I'm not sure how half the world does it, but they obviously do. But it's not necessary to buy a right hand drive Toyota anyway. The closest place to import cool Toyotas is actually Canada, believe it or not. Although a bit rare, you find a diesel BJ70, which looks like this:

If you'd prefer a Landcruiser 60 but still want a diesel, they are far more common up north.
But if you want something newer, you can turn south. Not Mexico, although a few might have snuck in there, but a bit further south. Like Central and South America. You can find all the dual cab solid axle Hiluxs and 70 series pick-ups, jeeps and troopies you want:

Plus 40 series body style that is as brand new as a 2001 model:

And all left hand drive, right at home on our US highways.

Ah, so the Crosslands is the ARO, which never came to be.
I believe it is IFS. It has an Eaton tranny with 4+:1 1st gear, all that torque - and for the price, it has to be at least ok? - or better than those pipedream overseas Toys we'll never see?

There's a '98 ARO here for sale for $6000. It's based on the Grand Cherokee drivetrain . Only about 35k miles on it, if anyones interested.
