Fuel Economy 1997 Montero

Looks like 25 mpg is going to require more significant mods than just synthetics.

I thought this link was interesting, so I thought I'd share.

Right. And extended drain intervals mean that running full synthetics is at worst a break even scenario.

....If I determine my gas mileage, I will let you know, but I thought it was better than 18.5 on the highway. Good Luck.

I'd like to hear what you're getting. Have you ever verified your speedo? We have those radar boxes that display your speed here and mine is only 1 mph over running 32s. I calculated my MPG as if it were spot on, though.

If I recall correctly, mine was ~8 over w/ 33's... or was that w/ the 32s? I don't remember any more. I just use a GPS anyway now that my speedo cable is kaput.

.... stay away from the K&N. it flows better, and will improve milage slightly, but it doesn't filter worth a damn.

fwiw,

Yeah, I keep hearing that. I'm inclined to play the Guinea pig and toss one in anyway, checking the inside of the airbox for stray dirt as I go. I drive a lot on Forest Service roads so filtration is a big factor. At least they don't cost that much and the mod is easy.

Synthetics all the way around, manual hubs, good tire pressure, servicing and an easy foot on the gas is about all we can do here. Unless it is possible, (like most vehicles) to make the engine more efficent with more air in, more air out. Better intake properties better exhaust. I read in one of the OZ forums about someone who actually cut down the exhaust size from ummm 2.5" to 2" I think... (I know it was a half inch cut down though) claiming more mid range power. He said the Montero's exhaust are over in size slightly. Intake, yea K&N seems to help mileage a bit but not block enough dirt. Either those sneaky Mitzu engineers produced the perfect intake/exhaust system or we have not looked long enough for something better. I just installed a superchip programmer in by dads F-250 fleet. $300 3 mile per gallon increase and freakin 50, 70, 90HP options with the 70 the most efficent, better shifting points....WOW I wish we had a company producing those.
Right now I get about 17MPG average with about 70% highway. This is figuring a plus 5% due to my 32's running my spedo + 5 MPH. I thought liquidium got a different reading with a better instrument...

I never verified my speedo, but I would assume that it is about the same as yours since we are running the same diameter tires with same model Montero. I will have to let you know about the mpg b/c I haven't paid much attention to it. It definately depends on how you drive. If I drive very smoothly, I seem to get really good mpg, but if I am busting tracks in a hurry, it obviously sucks up the gas. My buddies and I were cutting it close one time for formation here at West Point and I was really moving up a slight incline and used about a quarter tank in a 30 min trip. Sometimes I tend to have a lead foot, so I am sure my mpg is probably better than I usually get in reality, but I find the time to drive normally, I will figure it out for you. I also plan to get a zero to sixty time just for the hell of it and compare it to my brother's 1999 Montero and my Dad's Camaro.

My driving is mellow most of the time - anticipate redlights, drive below 60 mph, accelerate smoothly. I can be pretty Jekyll/Hyde, though - especially for dimwits doing 36 mph in the left lane through a 40 mph section.

OK, here's an idea: if both the RP oil and RL Water Wetter reduce engine temp as advertised, wouldn't I be able to switch my fan for a more efficient one that produces less drag? My engine never even gets a little warm, even in summertime parking lot traffic with the a/c cranked.
