Nah... I'm fully A/C certified/licensed... I won't waste my time with r134a on my personal vehicles... r134a work well in the newer vehicles and know all the systems quirks.


I'm licensed by IMACA for A/C and also ASE Master Certified. Not bragging but just want to make my point that I have been doing retrofits for 10 years now and I get the same A/C temps with R134 in an R12 system as if it had R12 still in there. There are little things that need taken care of to make this happen but it is cheap and easy.

My '90 Mazda 323 shop car blows 30* from the dash, my '84 Toyota truck used to blow 34* from the dash with a mechanical fan!! Now that it'll have an electric fan with the engine swap, I'm sure the temps will be even cooler.


Well now you tiring it impress me <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" /> ... if your getting 30 degrees Fahrenheit at the dash vent, then your evaporator is below freezing!!!... 34-36 degrees is about right... yes r134a gets as cold as r12, it doesnÆt handle high heat loads nearly as well... I've had to do many retrofits over the years as well, done properly with new compressor, expansion valve, receiver dryer, hoses and sealS, PAG oil, complete flush and evacuation, then recharged by weight... I will testify that a properly functioning r12 or even an r12 system running Freeze12 will out perform the best-retrofitted r134a system out there!!à as mention prior, the new r134a system showing up in the new vehicles are much improved over the earlier systems due to design changes in the refrigerant systems as well as the electronic control systems.


One issue you could be having problems with is the use of Pag oil in a retrofited R12 system that had mineral oil. Pag & Mineral oil do not mix well. I use Ester 100 synthetic oil in all my retrofits because it is not affected by either mineral or PAG. Just a suggestion.

Ok...well..I don't need to research the facts. They are common knowledge. With ASE Master Cert and my shop specializing in A/C work....you also are not conversing with an entry level or novice. So if you are well aware of their application, you know that mineral oil is for R12, PAG for factory R134, and Ester for any of the 3, especially Retros, right? Ok...well...as long as our processes are both reliable and have the same end result, who cares. My business reputation & customer satisfaction is proof enough for me. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I am just mearly trying to help people on the boards.

Contamination can really suck. Ya see when I dont flush the toilet after sitting down and putting something together...my dogs get really PISSED at me for contaminating their secondary water source. Well at least one of them does...the other one loves it. But he likes ass in general so that should be of no surprise.

Hey 93Corunner, if the system was just empty but still closed up, I.E. all hoses and fittings connected, you may be able to get away with a simple retro.

Spin the front of the compressor with your hand...not the actual pulley, they from of the compressor clutch. If you can turn it by hand, the compressor is not locked up which more then likely, no metal shavings have gone through.

Replace all the orings, especially the ones under the dash at the expansion valve. These are common leak spots on the Toyotas. To play it safe, put a new receiver/dryer on also since this is the water trap and filter for the system.

At this point, you should have a vacuum drawn on the system by a reputable shop. Could just as easy let them charge it also. System should get 6-8oz of Ester 100 oil and should be charged to 75-85% of the R12 capacity. Might even have them add a shot of dye to the system to help with any potential future leaks. I do this automatically with all A/C services.

Yes because 99% of the time, the system is almost empty of oil anyway. The refrigerant carries the oil so when it leaks out, it usually takes the oil along with it. I have always done it this way as I was trained and never had a problem.

Granted if you you want to follow everything to a T, the system will need flushed. BUT it is not necessary.
