3rd Gen OEM Navigation Installed! #456669 05/28/04 01:37 PM

I have been perusing this forum for a while. I have a 2001 4Runner Sport and have always wanted navigation for it. I have seen the offerings as far as aftermarket and I was not impressed. My goal is to keep my vehicle as factory looking as possible.

Last week I stumbled across an item on Ebay that fit my needs perfectly. This was an OEM navigation unit from a 2004 Camry. This unit was brand new and has been successfully retrofitted in many other Toyotas, however never a 3rd gen that I know of. To make a long story short, I bought it, installed it, and it is AWESOME!!

There is a bit of cutting required to make it physically fit in the dash since the unit itself is about 3/4" wider than the factory deck. However the end result is well worth it!

The site where I bought my unit from is OEMValue. The price is roughtly $1650 shipped. Below is a link to the pictures of how it looks installed:

Let me know if any of you have any questions.

That looks perfect, I've been looking for the same thing. Does it play DVD's and does it work with the stock CD changer from the 3rd gen? That looks great.

And if it does play DVD's, can you ground the e-brake wire so you can watch them while driving? Does teh screen tilt up also?

No, it doesn't play DVDs. However, there are ways to wire up an external video source such as a DVD player to factory nav units.

lotsamula,

Wow, that kicks so much A on so many levels! $1600 is steep but if the 04 Camry Nav systems are as good as everyone says they are, $1600 is a bargain.

Aside from cutting the hole open a little, was it just basically plug and play?

Thanks,
Bob

The wiring was very straight forward. Since it is a factory Toyota unit, it plugged directly into the factory wiring harness. The hardest part was finding the Vehicle Speed Sensor wire for the Nav. I ended up finding that wire at the ECU.

This headunit has all the features of the stock system - AM/FM CD with all the features. The only thing that it is missing is the cassette player which I almost never used. The CD slot is behind the motorized face.

This unit is so awesome that I don't know how I lived without it. A while back I priced out a navi system directly from Toyota and was quoted a figure upwards of $7000! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> Therefore when I saw this unit for $1600, I thought it was a steal. Considering whats on the market for aftermarket units and their prices, $1600 is quite reasonable.
