Factory Trailer Wiring #462620 06/11/04 04:53 AM

Hey! How's everyone doing? Haven't posted in a while, but I just spent 2 hours catching up.

I just purchased an 18.5' Stingray boat and when I went to pick it up at the dealer, I noticed that the trailer's passenger-side turn signal wasn't working. I just figured it was a bulb, but I took a voltmeter to it and I'm not getting any voltage on the far-right pin of the trailer plug. Left turn signal works, parking lights work on both sides, brake lights work only on the left. All lights are functioning properly on the 4Runner. Does anyone have an electrical diagram of the factory trailer wiring?

The last electrical-related modification I made was probably the turn signals on the TJM bumper, but like I said, all of the lights are functioning properly on the 4Runner. I also have front IPFs, rear IPFs, and the electric locker wiring... but these *shouldn't* have anything to do with the right turn-signal not working on the trailer wiring.

I dont know the colors off hand but if it helps I know most trailers are wired the same, with the same colors on the same side and such.

I assume you have taken that volt meter to the wiring harness and looked at the connection there.

Unplug the harness and check resistance on the trailer harness. Broken wire maybe? Is it a factory harness or aftermarket?

I should go back and clean up my own install a little as I have a couple of sharp bends I need to tidy up a bit...

Is it a new boat and trailer ?? If not, may be corrosion in the trailers harness ???

OK I've poked and prodded with the voltmeter and am now confident that the culprit is the "15 AMP TAILLIGHT CONVERTER AUTO CIRCUIT PROTECTION" module that is located on the inside of the rear interior panel, behind the driver's side taillight. There's voltage going into the converter, and voltage coming out - except for the right signal line. I've searched for the part and can't find it anywhere. The dealers don't sell it separately, but is included in the trailer wiring kit from Toyota for $190!

Any ideas? I'd like to keep it Toyota if possible... Would anyone who has removed their factory hitch be willing to sell me their converter?

Thanks.

Those converters go out all the time; always has been a problem. NAPA and other places carry the converter; not sure if you can get them without buying a whole trailer wiring kit or not tho'. ASK. Haven't had trouble with mine, and I don't use those stupid blue foldover splices either.

OR www.car-part.com for junkyarding for a Yota one.

Do the Napa replacements fit the Toyota connectors or do you have to run new pieces to each of the rear lights?

Thanks for your response:-)

I went to Radio Shack and got myself a terminal block and set it up that way. It's been awhile; seems I did some surgery on em and did a little solder and heat shrink.

If you need an FSM for wiring diagrams, we've got them in the Taco section and in the early trucks section.

If all else, the little troubleshooting light poked thru the insulation while activating the various lights works too.

Look 'em over and see what works for you.
